transmission leak 850

Hi... my 1997 855 has got a leak coming thru a small metal cover on the frontside of the transmission. The part is about 3" wide by about 5" long,(looks like a tiny oilpan) just inboard of where the dipstick enters the transmission. Does anybody have a way to get the part #? Or even have one lying about? Mine is rusted thru and will need to be changed. The car has a static leak from it, though it is worse when its driven or the fluid is hot.

I think mine is leaking there also. What is this thing exactly? Thanks.

It's essentially a cover or shroud for where the dipstick sits. I am not sure as to why its necessary (design wise) but there ya have it! It is a bit of a pain to swap, I just installed my re-freshed used one from the other trans today... We shall see if it holds fluid tomorrow....

    A pretty good diagram:

But the best bet is to find one at a junk yard. It is aluminum alloy so it should not rust, but salt will eat away at it. It also needs a seal.

      Klaus,

Yep, it would be part 30a in the diagram. This one is shot and the one on my spare trans isn't much better but is going on the car after a cleanup. For the ~20.00 or so I can get a new one and put it on the side until the next fluid change. I very much doubt a JY part would be any better.

My question is: if a new part is only $20 & replacing it is a "pain", why didn`t you put in a new part instead of another old part which is essentially in the same condition as the one being replaced?
        Just asking.
        Rich

Well, seeing as the car is immobile in its current state and at the front of my workshop blocking other progress, I do not have much choice. Volvo is typically very slow at getting the parts when you order them it seems.
I will get one, I just can't wait the extra week right now.
