contemplating a new Volvo S40-V40

I am contemplating buying a new Volvo. I drove a used V40 and it went like mad. I really liked it but it was an automatic so I decided to try to find a standard. I like the size & look of the v40 but I have not been able to find one with a standard transmission in Canada. Does anyone know if there is a standard available in Canada? Also, what are your opinions of the v40? (good point, bad points)

Thanks

Steve

    Steve,

If you can live with the automatic and the low pressure turbo, the V40 is a great car. I'm happy with my 2000 (14,000 miles), and have had no mechanical problems. It is quick enough, handles well, and is comfortable. With the seats folded down in the back, you can fit a lot of stuff in there. On the negative side, it can get expensive with added options, and the interior (at least in mine) had several rattles that needed to be worked out.

Volvo thinks you don't want a manual transmission. If you really do, check out the Passat wagon - it also goes like stink. If you can live with the automatic, then the V40 is still an option for you. When I upgraded from my 740 turbo 5-spd wagon I thought I could live with an automatic (because I hadn't been able to find an 850 5-spd turbo wagon in over a year). It was a big (& costly) mistake for me - even my young daughters disliked driving it. I eventually found a 5 speed tho, so I'm happy now.

    Good luck.

Nope. The V40 has only been out since July 2000 in Canada. While the car is four years old in Europe and two years young in the U.S., the Canadian market has had it for only 10 months and like their U.S. counterpart, did NOT elect to bring in a manual.

Great little car. Goes like stink. Handles well. Just plain fun to drive and great value when you consider that every single safety feature that's standard in an S80 is also standard in a 40 series (well... excluding DSTC).

Re: contemplating a new Volvo S40-V40

I, too, had this dilemma. I deliberated for some time and test drove several other cars before coming to the decision to get the V40. Every previous car I have had has been manual, and that was a very big sticking point for me. I saw many manuals in Europe and waited an extra year in the hope Volvo would bring them in for 2001, but no dice, and no hope for next year either.

I have now had my V40 for about 6 weeks. It is wonderful fun to drive --- nimble, quick, and solid-feeling. I'm slowly adjusting to having an automatic transmission (it does have its advantages in heavy traffic, and at traffic lights on a sharp incline....); my right hand still reaches out to shift as I'm slowing down but my left foot is now behaving itself. Gas milage overall has averaged just over 28 MPG. All in all, I'm pleased with my decision.

The bad points? The paint seems to be a bit more prone to dinging than I'd like. I don't know whether this is a problem with my car alone, with Volvos in particular, with clear-coated cars in general, or with very-newly-painted cars (mine was special ordered, so it spent no time waiting around in the dealer's lot). And there's an odd rattle somewhere on the passenger side in the front. I'll have that attended to in the next few months.

      Good luck with your decision!
