2004 Gas tank Venting problem V70-XC70

I have a 2004 V70 with 160K. I only fill the tank until the nozzel clicks off.
This morning with only a 1/4 tnk of fuel, it overflowed after pumping only
a little over a gallon. Even very slow filling kept shutting the nozzel off. I quit after 2 gallons. I have never experienced this problem before.
I have read some of the older posts and wounder where to start on this issue.
Thx.

Arthur - You do not mention where you live.

In Massachusetts and many other states, the pumping system contains a vapor recovery system.

The system is sealed by a bellows (that people hate!) or in other cases has a small tube in the nozzle to suck vapors out of your tank as the fuel goes in. Often the hose is a double hose with a vapor space surrounding the fill hose. This is to reduce vapors in the atmosphere - a gallon or more of vapor for every gallon pumped.

If people top up like I see many do, gasoline can get into this outer vapor hose and bugger up the system.

This fuel can come out as soon as you squeeze the handle, sometimes even before.

This happened to me when I tried to put fuel into a brand new loaner - an XC60 with 35 miles on it! It covered the entire rear behind the wheel.

I washed it off with the windshield washer stuff and went in to tell the attendant - he came out with a bucket of soapy water and a sponge! This taught me a lesson.

Now I always dip the nozzle down before I bring it to my car. Occasionally I do get a drib of fuel.

    Have you tried another station?

When you say overflowed, do you mean that the nozzle clicked off, and not that gasoline poured out of the opening? Did you try a different pump?

I found that not all nozzles are created equal, and some need to be pulled back a little (1/2 inch) to work correctly. I have never gotten used the the California style accordian nozzles that need to be pushed all of the way in before the pump will work.

If you suspect that the vent hose on the car is blocked, that is an entirely different issue. Note: spiders and wasps cannot block the vent tube, the vapors will kill any insects, besides the fact there is no outside access to the vent tube.

Klaus, The fuel poured out of the filler pipe as the nozzel was clicking off.
I then tried triggering a very low fuel flow into the tnk. and it still flooded up the fill pipe. I have had to indication of a problem
      until this attempt to fill.
      Thx.

Pull of the gas cap and with the eraser end of a pencil, verify that the small aluminum flap is still there and working. If you have a long length of small diameter hose, try feeding it into the tank.

Back in the old days, if the charcoal cannister was full, that would create very slow fill rates. I don't think this is your problem, as you cannot get any gas into the tank.

          Klaus,
after a little trouble shooting the below is what I know (2004 V70):
-- A 2nd fueling attempted confirmed it takes only about 1/2 to 1/2 gallon
and trips the nozzel off. I fed a small tube into the fill pipe, no resistance until about 16-18 "
-- when loosening the filler cap there is a slow hissing sound(I am assume it is going into the tank) that last about 10 seconds, after a short drive (couple of miles).
-- the little flapper valve in the inlet pipe is there and moves freely.
-- I removed some of the rear cargo covers.... no access apparent to the
vent line shown in the assembly sketches of the tank I was able to locate. Haven't tried the wheel well or underside of car yet.
** when I look in the filler pipe, the flapper valve assembly, has two small openings (tear drop shape) on the perimiter of the assembly.
Are those vent holes??? that i could try back pressuring through with a can of air..., etc.
I am open to any suggestion on how to try and clear the vent pipe,... is there
a vent filter that can be replaced??
          Thx.

There should not be a filter. My 850 is totally different. Those 2 holes could be your vent and you could try cleaning them out with whatever means is appropriate. There should be a small spring back there for the flapper, so be carefull.

I am surprised that you met with resistance before you reached the tank. Makes me wonder if someone stuffed something down your filler pipe. Is there an anti-syphon grill?

When I inserted the small tube in our 2003 XC it went in only 14-16 " and hit something soft also. I think your right that there is an anti-syphon mesh before the tank.
I will keep exploring and let the site know what I find.
              Thx.
