Hello all,
My brother purchased a 98 s70 with 120k.There was oil around several of the plugs and mechanic says no compression on 1 cylinder.He paid 1400 for the car and was'nt sure whether to have it repaired or take a loss.Any advice would be appreciated.

    Oil around the plugs is normal for a clogged PCV and an old filler cap seal.

    Not having any compression in #5 is a serious problem. If the car sat for a long time without being started, pour a table spoon of oil in the spark plug hole and check the compression again. If the compression is still zero, you will need new valves or rings. If the compression rises to above 125 or so, start the engine and let it idle for 10 minutes, let the engine cool for a bit and try reading the compression again. All compression test should be done with a warm engine.

    What you don't want is a broken set of piston rings. Bad valves can be cured with a remaned head, but those are not cheap.
