S70 AC not working, S70

I've searched the forums (some please point me to the answer if this has already been answered) 2000 S70 AC clutch does not engage when the AC is turned on. The cooling fan also does not turn on with the AC (I believe that it should). The cooling fan will turn on if I let the car idle on a hot day.

Is this a common problem with a known fix?

Thanks,
Chris

This has been answered and beat to death several thousand times, on every forum. If the presssure is too low, you need to add R134a. Find a pressure gauge and check it out before you buy a 12oz can.

    These systems do eventually leak.

Yes, I've already checked the pressure. I don't know the last time this AC unit worked. We moved from VT to ID and now it is a concern. If I hook up a recharge bottle with a gauge it is in the normal range.

My question is should the radiator fan turn on when the AC is turned on?

      Thanks,

      Chris

The radiator fan will turn on after pressure builds in the system, not as soon as you turn on the AC.

Try unplugging the pressostat on the low pressure line and use a paperclip to jump the wires. If the compressor does not engage, you could have a bad pressostat or a worn clutch.

To determine if the clutch gap is too great, I take a broom stick and carefully tap the clutch face and see if it engages. Lots of moving parts, so watch yourself. Smarter people use a feeler gauge and check the clutch gap. If the gap is over .25, then make 3 shims and glue them to the clutch face to decrease the gap.

The pressostat can be replaced as there is a schrader valve between it and the line.
