power steering question 850

hi all:

Just jot back from a 400 mile round trip up to northern michigan. I had drops of power steering fluid on the driveway from the steering rack. Question is are there o-rings or seals from the hose to the rack that can be replaced to stop leaking? The buzzing is from my power steering pump and I just want the car to stop wining and leaking without replacing the rack, which otherwise seems to be ok....thx....

power steering question 850

I used lucas stop leak for a long time. It works well. My mechanic added regular fluid when he replaced the transmission and that's the problem right now. Looks like rebuilt racks are 190.00 or so and a used pump is about 30-40.00 on ebay. Lines are about 100.00 each. Looks like I have a new project. I will have the pump replaced first just to get rid of the bearing noise.... thx for input.

power steering question 850

Where exactly are the drips originating from is the main question... I just recently replaced the two cross-over pipes on my 1997 855s rack due to drippage. There are teflon crush-to-form washers/gaskets that came with the new lines. These are installed at the factory before the tube is flared, so there is no way to get a replacement one on/off...
I havent dealt with either of the hi or lo pressure lines yet, I would assume there is some sort of gasket or crush washer there as well.

power steering question 850

Hi, the first question is: where is the leaking point?
- main line joints; easy to check and fix but not propable
- pinion joint (wheel axel to rack); makes the whole bottom of car dirty / rack removal
- cylinder seals /rack removal
an additive is cheap and easy but hardly long lasting but could be used for time shifting for final fix

br tapsa
850/94 rack pinion seal fix in 2008 with 210kkm, still running fine

My Rack started leaking, and I used the Lucas P/S treatment and it worked.
You get a turkey baster and remove what you can and add this stuff designed
to swell up the weeping seals.

Good luck, Bill

I second what Bill said, but I used synthetic ATF instead of Lucas. I did it once about 3 1/2 years ago and I just finished doing it again. Both times the leak stopped within a month. My rack and pump have about 235k on them and are still going strong! A big money saver...:)
