SAS error code P0410 850 1996

I recently read that I can eliminate the error code P0410 (SAS air pump) by soldering a 1N4003 diode between two terminals of the ECU, effectively tricking the ECU into thinking that the SAS is working properly ( http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/140772-sas-air-pump-deletewrite-up-with-pics/). I've been staring at a CEL for over 10 years now - SURELY it's not that simple???

Thanks,

Bernie

Yes, it is! I did that to my 1996. Take the ECU out of the box after disconnecting the battery. Take the cover off, solder in the resistor. Unplug the big blue wire from the fan module. Plug battery back in, and presto, no more p0410!!

I also removed the blower, plugged up the SAS at the exhaust, removed the vacuum lines for the SAS and covered the hole in the air cleaner box. There is actually room in the engine compartment...

OK, here's an update. Since I had a spare ECU, I did the "diode MOD" on it, then swapped ECU's. THE CEL did still come ON when I first started the car, but after clearing the P0410 code with my OBDII scanner, it stayed OFF (SUCCESS!!). I will modify my other ECU today, and swap the two back out (I like to keep a spare ECU for when my Vovo-$tealer tells me I need a new one). I did NOT disconnect, unplug or remove anything at this point.

You will need to disconnect the large blue wire from the blower relay. The relay looks just like the fan relay except it is hanging from the blower under the battery. The relay must still stay and function properly.

On my car, the relay fell apart on the inside but a junk yard came to the rescue.

Well, I found a 1N4007 laying on my desk (imagine that). Will solder it into the ECU over the weekend. Thanks!
