Timing belt reassembly.....tricks and technique 1998 xc70 V70-XC70

Looking for an easier way. The plastic cowl is very problematic around the crankshaft, any advice for threading around this beast. In frustration I cut the old belt off as I was all locked up around this plastic on the bottom.
All help and advice greatly appreciated.

    Timing belt reassembly.....tricks and technique 1998 xc70 V70-XC70

Your 1998 is the same for 1993-2000 and beyond. After removing the 2 10mm bolts and dirt shield, the new belt will just barely slide back on - takes a little wiggeling. Try not to move the crank while doing this and verify the mark before looping the belt around the other parts.

Timing belt reassembly.....the biggest obstacle V70-XC70

Thanks Klaus, success, after looking at several posts and videos, I finally saw the culprit adjacent
And behind the crankshaft gear that I had to thread past a small dime size diameter knob.
This is the biggest snafu of the whole project, but with patience and wiggling I got it on..
Timing Belt was not really in bad shape, but without history I have peace of mind.
Water pump is now in good shape too.

    Timing belt reassembly.....tricks and technique 1998 xc70 V70-XC70

On our later V70 I think the plastic piece under the crank pulley is held on with (2) 10mm headed bolts. I have never removed the crankshaft pulley and just twisted the belt to get it in position. If your's is not the same, there is probably a reason they changed it. But that does not make sense since 'they' are not engineering cars to make them easier to work on...

The 2004 motor, if it's the same, has two 10mm bolts holding the plastic piece in place. I don't remember the exact location of the bolts, one maybe at 6 o'clock and the other at 3, when you face the crank pulley. I never remove the pulley. Hope this helps.

There are videos on-line that describe this. Go to fcp's site.

Timing belt reassembly ... Plastic in the way V70-XC70

FCP video is great, gave me the confidence to go ahead, somehow I think they were using a earlier model that does not have the additional plastic that makes this far more difficult.

The first time you do this it's challenging. The second time you struggle to remember the tricks you learned the first time. The third time you're done in an hour. The two 10mm bolts you won't forget. It's a lifesaver.

Take notes for yourself for next time. Learning the timing marks was hard for me. Especially the crank. Make sure you rotate the crank by hand, a few complete cycles of the motor, before you start it.
