S60 alarm goes off randomly with weak alarm S60 2004

Son called and said several times lately the red light on dash has been flashing indicating the alarm has gone off. Yesterday the alarm went off while car was sitting in driveway so he now knows it is really going off.

He said the alarm signal was "lame". He activated the alarm using the key remote and when he did that the horn joined in.

So,
- alarm goes off on its own
- alarm siren seems to be weak
- horn sounds when alarm activated by remote but not when alarm goes off on its own

Have seen posts about replacing siren if that is what causes the problem. Is there any diagnostics to follow to find other causes? Can I just disable the alarm? Saw posts about pulling a fuse but did not see one that said for sure that does it.

I found a fuse in the owner's manual, in the fuse box on the left side of the dash board:
    38 Alarm siren* 5 amp

    * Please be aware that if this fuse is not intact, or if it is removed, the alarm will sound.

But your real problem is the alarm control module. It probably needs to be replaced. The bad news is, it is between the fender and fender liner on the front passenger side. Lots of labor and pop rivits to get the inner fender off/on.

Moisture or a leaking battery destroys the circuit board. I would probably assume that in your case it is the battery that is leaking.

    Dealer fix is around $500!!

The battery is in the trunk so I don't think that would mess up the control module. Whatever the cause it does not sound like something I want to fix: too much work for me, too much cost for dealer. I can live without an alarm.

Will remove the fuse and see what happens. From this and other posts it sounds like maybe the alarm will go off, maybe not. Assume it will not stay on forever; that would not be good!

Will post back if anything interesting happens. It's not my car so I have to wait for my son to try it.

Inside the siren control module there is a small battery that tends to leak. Not a car lead/acid battery. Just a small rechargable battery like you would use for a flashlight.

There should also be a warning message on the left side of the instrument panel.
