Angle gear coupling V70-XC70 2003

Hey all, lots of work needed as of late :( Mechanic says angle gear is no longer engaged. I noticed a whirring sound from front end and thought it would be a bearing. Well I had the car in today to do the cam seals and though I'd ask him if the bearing is bad. He came back saying in his opinion the angle gear coupling is most likely shot. I'm just curious- If I wanted to confirm this could I not jack up the car on the front passenger and turn the wheel. If it's spinning free then the bevel gear is no longer engaged, correct?? Just trying to figure out a sure fire way to tell if it's the coupling.

Thanks!

Yaleh.

IIRC, the 2003 has the Haldex system to drive the rear wheels. You should now check the oil in both the angle gear box AND the Haldex box. The Haldex also has a filter which should have been replaced some time ago, along with the oil.

Hey KlausC,

I'm definitely going to do this soon as well as the rear diff and the transmission. I've never done any of them.

At this point it looks like the coupling is stripped. I jacked the car up on passenger side and spun the wheel; there was no movement in the drive shaft. And conversely turning the drive shaft does nothing to the front wheel. It spun fluidly, so I'm hoping my gear is still good and it's the job of replacing the coupling. Fingers crossed..

I just did a search on Haldex, which I believe your car has:

The Haldex circuit board(computer) can get wet if the seal on the housing fails, and refuse to engage. Old oil and dirty filter can also be a cause. The dealer wants a fourtune to replace it.

Or wait.. I guess there is an inner shaft that runs from the transmission through the bevel gear input shaft over to the passenger side? So what's the best test to know if the bevel is not connected anymore?
