Engine Noise...Vibration! 850 1995

Recently purchased this vehicle has 69k miles non-turbo. It seems to be running rough to me. It has a throaty noise but I am told that is what 850's sound like. When at a complete stop I can feel the car vibrating and sounds noisy inside to me but you can barely hear it on the outside. If I put the car in neutral while at a stop it is a little better. I have had the vehicle completely go over including the 60k service. They tell me it is in excellent shape. I am wondering if someone on here has had a similar problem and fixed it or is this just something I must live with. Any help would be appreciated

My T5 exhibited similar symptoms - turned out to be an upper engine mount. I assume that has been checked - I've heard it can be tricky to diagnose visually.

Re: Engine Noise...Vibration! 850 1995

Have a look at the engine mount on the passenger side just behind the crankshaft pulley. Very common problem. When they fail, the engine is in metal to metal contact with the subframe and transmits noise/vibration to the body. Easy to replace. remove r.f.wheel and fold back the plastic fender liner. Support the engine with a piece of 2x4 about 10" long and a floor jack under the oil pan. Remove the two bolts attaching the mount to the engine, two bolts to the subframe, mount comes off. They run around $100 at us dealers.

Bob, how can you tell that the mount is bad by just looking at it?

Re: Engine Noise...Vibration! 850 1995

There are pins on the mount that stick out toward the front and rear of the car, that go thru sort of oval holes. The rear-pointing one is easier to look at. I checked mine yesterday, a small mirror helps. If the pin is sitting on the bottom of the oval the mount has collapsed.

Fortunately/unfortunately, mine was not sitting on the bottom. That's nice that I don't have a collapsed mount, but my car (also a 1995) vibrates too and I can't figure out why. I have a 97 850 that is _much_ smoother. The 95 practically hums inside.

Re: Engine Noise...Vibration! 850 1993

I have had this vibration problem with other cars as well -

and the easy solution was to change the idle rpm a little - up or down.

Sometimes you hit a resonance - and have to change the frequency by changing the rpm.

By the way - you exhaust will benefit from this too -

the shaking loosens everything - including along welding seams.

Just a suggestion - never tried it with my Volvo 850 that also has a little tendency towards shaking when cold....
