Wheel bearing? Which one? 850 1995

I think I have a noisy front wheel bearing. I can hear it above 30 mph. Whining type sound. Still there when I put the car in neutral at speed.

My real question is which one is it? It is hard to determine. It gets louder when I turn left only, not right. Sometime ago I remember reading about how to determine which one it is based on the noise when turning. Am I correct in assuming if it's noisier when turning left it is the passenger front (right) wheel bearing?

Also, if anyone thinks it isn't a wheel bearing I'm all ears...:)

Any help greatly appreciated!

Jim

    Mileage?

Turning left loads the right and vice versa. When mine went south they were roaring pretty badly. I was surprised to find that Autozone actually carried Timken hub/bearing assemblies for the 850 so I replaced both about 30,000 miles ago. Been quiet ever since. While you're at it, might as well look for the other stuff that may need attention too like sway bar end links, ball joints, etc.

Thought I had a bad wheel bearing on my 940, seemed to make the right sounds. When I finally got the thing on jack stands, it was a stuck brake pad. So, you never know with these noises.

    Hi Jim,

    Wheel Brg or brakes?
This might be a good time to use one of those IR thermometers from
Harbor freight. Check each wheel or bearing after running on the highway and see if one or more is way hotter. My guess is that the problem wheel will be
noticeably hotter. You could measure the rotor temperatures and go from there.

if when turning left, then the right side is likely the culprit....left turning putting more stress on the right side, hence the noise...not a bad DIY repair...good pics of procedure on BB, and on MatthewsVolvo site...good excuse to buy yourself a quality breaker bar...
