Read window not working, 1998 S70 S70 1998

The left rear window on our 1998 S70 T5 suddenly stopped working. Is there an easy way to to tell if the problem is with the switch, or the motor itself? It goes down, but not up. I am trying to figure out if this is something we can tackle ourselves or if we should just haul it to our Volvo mechanic. New to this forum, thanks for any suggestions!

I have replaced all my switches on my '99. It was driving me nuts - one window switch sizzled and smoked, another stopped working. I reversed wires in the door cluster for the rear side because the master IS dependent on either British or American, and being such as the British I had bought the wrong master. That still didn't work - you must get RH (Brit.) or LH (U.S) master. I have cleaned contacts. I replaced the conductive contact pin under a lever with a nail. Watch out for the tiny spring inside the pin casing! Then, soon after installing a brand new passenger switch, it failed, by going up but not down. I pried it with an awl, blew into it, tapped it, and it got working again. But that was the new one; sad to say it, no matter what I did with the old switches I could find no satisfactory cure. I have had to buy all new.

as mentioned earlier in this thread, what's with the window switches, as well other control surfaces for that matter, getting all 'gummy'...mine are like this, in a car that has been child-free/food-free/smoke-free for most of its operating life...is it a volvo thing???

So the window motor is OK, as it does go down. Does the window not go up using the driver's switch AND the left rear door switch? If it is just the left rear door switch, swap the switch with the one from the other side to check the switch itself. The switch pulls straight up to come out.

Sometimes, the driver's switch gets corroded from lack of use. Just pull up about 20 times to wear away the rust.

      A (somewhat) related issue, 2000 V70 SE

Had similar symptoms with the rear driver's side window not operating from the driver's door quad-button master switch pack.

The good news is that after switch disassembly and cleaning the contacts, the quad switch pack functions properly once again.

The bad news, is that we still have to look at the unsightly and worn master switch buttons (white plastic showing through, underneath the gooey rubberized coating).

Question: Is the plastic quad button switch insert piece available? (It probably is obgtainable from a used switch, but the entire switch assy is not needed, only the buttons).

        S and V master switch assembly S70 1998

The buttons are not for sale separately. I know how you feel, my 1998 had the same sticky problem. All of the 1998-2000 are that way and 2001 doesn't fit.

You could try a pick&pull to look for a better switch assembly, that is the cheapest method.

I remember somewhere where the switches were recoated with multiple layers of enamel. Or was it shrink wrap??

I'll look around, but don't hold your breath.

Neither the master switch in the driver's door nor the switch in the left rear door produce any result. All other windows working fine. But since the "down" worked normally, it seems maybe it is in the switch or the connection to the motor, not the motor itself? I don't have all of the tools nor the expertise to take the door apart and replace the motor (well, maybe, but it would take me days)but it reading around it seems like maybe just a switch fix MIGHT do it. I read in another posting that spraying the switch with teflon lube and letting it dry may help, does that make sense? And..which switch? If there is a problem with one switch, shouldn't the other one still work? Apologies for the uninformed questions. Hoping to avoid a four-hour round trip to the mechanic (we live in the middle of nowhere) and big bill if there is a simple solution. Thanks!

The window switch changes the polarity to the motor. Because the motor works in one direction and not the other, the motor is fine. It is one of the two switches. You do not need to take off the door panel.

Get a flat screwdriver and carefully pry up the rear window switches, both of them. Then plug the rear passenger side switch into the harness for the rear driver side and see if you get the same result. If the window now works, then it is the simple matter of getting a new passenger switch.

If the window still doesn't work, the fault is with the driver's master switch. This is probably what is wrong anyway, just more expensive to replace. And, why I suggested to move the switch up and down a bizzilion times to help clean up the internals.

The master switch can be 'cleaned', if you are lucky. Or it can be made totally infunctional if the cleaner doesn't work. You could look around on line for a new master switch, and there are a few people who refurbish the master switch.

OK! Sooo...we swapped the switches in the two rear doors and now both rear windows go up and down...but on the left, ONLY from the switch in that door. The left rear window will still not go up from the master control (it will go down). Thanks for the suggestions! We will look to replace the master control (it is 16 years old and looks terrible from all the use, anyway...). And the windows are all up and ready for the next rain. Thanks!
