850R tire smoking 850 97

Hello,

I own a 97 850R, so far stock, except for wheels and tires. I have heard of people being able to smoke the tires from a stop. Mine will not. Even if the tracs is off. I might get a little squeek then it just launches. It seems like there is a huge torque limit placed on the engine, as it seems to dog then as the revs go past 2500 a rush of power. The boost is full below this RPM (11 psi checked with guage). The car runs great gets good gas mileage, is maintained and will pull to 5600 RPM in top gear. The car acts like it has a limited slip diff, if I do spin the tires on a wet road, it pulls straight, like both wheels are pulling. I have not had anyone verify that both are. So I guess my ? is, will 850T's and R's usually smoke the tires, and is there a torque limit in 1st gear, if so is it just for the R version or does the t5 also have it.

Thanks

Richard

Re: 850R tire smoking 850 97

All Turbos have a torque limiter as far as I know. Most after market chips take care of that though. Smoking tires is good for show, but bad for 0-60 and very hard on the tires. These 225/45/16 Toyos found that out.

I have a '94 850 turbo sedan and it will burn the tires right off the rims if I don't catch it in time. I've always thought that it sould have much more meat on the ground so I wouldn't have to feather it so much when I take off. Wet weather is REALLY exciting!

Re: 850R tire smoking V70-XC70 99

Actually, I'm curious about this too.

I haven't tried but I don't think I could do it on our V70R. Can this be done with the automatic transmission or is it just with the manual? Will they spin just by stomping the gas when you are stopped?

Let us know,

Mike

darn rite it will! it's obvious even with the windows up and stereo blasting such that you don't hear any screeching, but just watch your tacho - if you're accelerating say from 2500rpm and the needle suddenly jumps to 4-5000 rpm, you know your tires aren't gripping. for a fact they're spinning away furiously and leaving marks on the road!

i am VERY careful on wet roads, i never boost much cos it will really cos the tires just spin so easily.

saying that, turbo owners shd also exercise caution going up ramps on multi-story carparks. i used to "rush up" the office carpark in my old car and test the most mornings going to work. i tried that when i first got my T5, and when it boosted suddenly ... man, i almost lost it!

Re: 850R tire smoking V70-XC70 99

Thanks for the responses - I'll have to check how mine performs next time I'm in a safe/clear area.

However I still don't think mine will spin on try pavement - it's probably a combination of the AWD and TRACS (which can't be turned off on my 99). I could also be the 'R' engine which has a bit more HP but less torque than the T5.

When I first read the responses, I was worried that my engine was perhaps losing power but my 0-60 times are still fine (about 7-8 seconds)

Thanks again for the feedback,

Mike

It's an automatic and all you do is put the peddle to the floor and hang on. Doesn't have positraction. I'm sure that would help cut down on the tire spin.

Re: 850R tire smoking V70-XC70 99

Thanks for the responses. Seems some cars do and some don't. If I put it to the floor with tracs off. It lags the first few feet then full boost comes in and the car just launches, with no spin just acceleration, which actually is a good thing.

Thanks

Richard
