"Starter' sounds different, car won't start V70-XC70 1999

Hi,

Not sure what is going on, but...

1999 Standard Trans V70

CAR NOT STARTING, ATYPICAL SOUNDS
I went to start the car. Everything sounded fine for a second, but then the starter noise seemed to change to thinner, "electronic version" of the normal robust starter sound.

After I back the key up (stop trying to start it), I can hear an electronic tone coming from the engine compartment, maybe for as long as a minute or so from the engine. Eventually, something like a relay clicks and the tone stops.

When I try to start it now, I just get that weird new starter sound, that sounds like a softer, fake version of the starter noise, but the car is not starting.

Any ideas please?

It might be "lawnmower syndrome", where unburned fuel washes down the cylinder walls, reducing compression to the point where the engine won't start.

I have had this happen once with my 2000 V70-- it gave me a scare-- I thought perhaps my timing belt had broken. I pulled the timing belt cover and had a look, fearing the worst.

This problem is most often associated with running the car for a very brief period and shutting it off (moving the car in the driveway, moving it to the other side of the street), resulting in flooding. On a subsequent attempt to restart, it won't catch because of the compression loss, and it will turn over very easily because the starter doesn't have to fight compression, resulting in an abnormal cranking sound.

Try cranking it with the accelerator fully depressed. You can also pull the plugs and add some oil to each cylinder to restore compression.

    Good luck!

It worked! I went out after a few days and did as you suggested, held the pedal down and tried to start it. It wouldn't start easily, but after much "skipity-skipity-skipity" of the starter but no starting, it finally did start. It idled rough for a second and failed. I started it again on the first try, so I gave it some gas until it stabilized. It was cold out (17degrees)... Could that also be s factor ?

Still wondering what the prolonged, high pitch tone sound was from when it wouldn't start. Maybe I have some questionable sensors ?
