OEM Timing Belt Kit V70-XC70

GM ALL, I have a question about Klaus's favorite Volvo, the 2001 V70XC. I have 209,000 miles on it and I am planning to do the timing belt. I replaced the TB at 105,000 and according to Volvo's maintenance schedule the Beast(yes, I lovingly named her that because she works like a beast) needs the TB changed. I need some advice from all the good people on this forum. I saw a timing belt and water pump kit on FCPEURO for $170. The pump, TB tensioner, TB idler come form GMB. 4 seals are from Elring. The TB is from Contitiech and a camshaft plug is from Volvo. I have not gotten a price for a similar kit from Volvo, but I was looking for advice to FCPEURO in general. Are these OEM parts up to Volvo specs?? Am I looking for trouble by not using a Volvo TB and water pump kit??

Thanks in Advnace

    Klaus, no leaks. I would have never thought about the thermostat. I changed the thermostat at 138K, about 4 years ago. Again, this is fact finding mission, as I am trying to do the right things for the Beast.

    1x Engine Timing Belt TB331 Contitech_logo $65.49
    1x Engine Timing Belt Tensioner 30638277A Gmb_logo $108.43

      OEM Timing Belt Kit V70-XC70

      Recently I had the timing belt, idler, tensioner and water pump changed on a newly purchased 1998 V70 with 100K miles. It has the mechanical tensioner instead of hydraulic - the change from hydraulic to mechanical occurred sometime in the 1998 model year.

      I wanted to use OEM parts:

      Belt = Conti TB331
      Tensioner = INA (Volvo 30638277)
      Idler = INA (Volvo 8630590) Note this is the new number for 9146376.
      Water Pump = Aisin WPV800 (Volvo 30751700)

      I found that Tasca Volvo sells a kit with the belt, tensioner and idler for less than anyone else. The 30758261 kit for my 1998 V70 was $110 at Tasca. I separately bought an Aisin WPV800 water pump. My TB and tensioner were previously changed at 70K but that was 10 years ago. All the rotating parts that we replaced (idler, tensioner, water pump) had some play or roughness in the bearings.

      Engines through 3188688 use the same 30758261 timing kit as my 1998. Does that include your 2001 engine ?

      The water pump, seals etc can be purchased from FCP although Tasca may have a good price on the OE water pump. If you buy an Aisin water pump, the 7 mounting bolts must be purchased separately (Volvo 985151).

      The IPD kit listed by Klaus is an excellent choice. I paid $110 + shipping for the Tasca kit and separately bought the Aisin water pump from FCP for $85, but still had to buy the 7 water pump bolts at $1 each. IPD has all those items for $214, about the same price as buying the timing kit, water pump and bolts from Tasca.

      Considering the amount of work involved in changing the TB and the consequences of a failure in any rotating part, I would use the OE brands: INA for idler and tensioner, Aisin for the water pump. While the engine coolant is drained, check the condition of radiator and heater hoses. If any hoses need replacement, use OE.

      Mike

      Costs more than FCP, at $214, but is all OEM. Tasca is more expensive as the parts are separate (water pump at 102, pulley at 57, tensioner at 62,and belt at 37), plus shipping charges.

      Stop at a dealer and get 1 gallon of antifreeze and 1 gallon of distilled water at the grocery store. Zerex G-05 can be substituted for OEM antifreeze during a full flush.

    Since you will be replacing the water pump might a good time for a new thermostat and temp sensor. Also check the heater core before draining the fluid.

    Nothing wrong with the Conti belt, I prefer the OEM water pump and seal because they do last a while...

    Why does FCP include the front and rear cam seals??? Are yours leaking? That is a lot of extra work, plus a locking tool for the rear cams???

    You are due for, at least, a belt, pump, tensioner, idler, serp belt because it has to come off anyway.
