LP Turbo upgrade to HP possible? 850 97

I have a 1997 854 GLT w\the LP Turbo and would like some feedback on the idea of upgrading to a HP Turbo. Perhaps from someone that might have looked into it or did it or even if it's possible or not, if it is possible then would it bolt right up and or would there be plumbing issues and what about the ECU? Any and all input would be appreciated. I have the chance to pick up a full blown turbo from a 1998 S70 T-5 for $500.00 parts only if it would work.

Thanks

    Bill,

Arno is right. With enough money anything is possible. If you just want your car to go as fast as the HPT model, it probably won't be too hard. Not sure if there are more parts you need to worry about...it wouldn't just be a simple bolt-on application.

And if you have the money and want to go all out upgrade, why not do more than just HPT upgrade. There are so many things you can do to improve the performance, it all comes down to money, time, and energy.

With enough $$$ anything is possible.. How fast can you afford to go?

But to go from an LPT to a HPT you would also need to lower the compression. Might be possible by using a thicker head-gasket or you need to install different pistons to lower the compression. Then you probably also need an ECU from an HPT car (with the right fuel/boost/ignition mappings) and the turbo from a HPT engine (or get the current one upgraded to HPT specs)

There may be other (more subtle) differences between the engine construction such as connecting rods and/or crankshaft, but that would require some research to find out.

Then there's the gear-ratios of your current transmission, which may also be different from a standard HPT car.

All in all it's usually a lot cheaper to simply trade in your car for a similar milage HPT version..

    Bye, Arno.

There was a thread on the Turbobricks site having to do with

why the compression has to be lowered. I started the thread.

-------(Waiting for the applause to fade.)---------

Anyway I think the main reason was that to get more power

you need more air+fuel. A bigger combustion chamber contains more

of that. The turbo provides the filling and it is similar to a

      bigger non turbo engine.

An oversimplification of course, but true.

      Rich
