what stereo upgrade options exist? V70-XC70 01

Hi,

We are about to buy a 2001 T5 real soon, but I have to say that in my opinion, the stereo system is terrible. The sound quality should have been much better for a $40K car. It is boomy and unclear. Does anyone think that the problem is the electronics or the speakers or both?

So what are my options? I have not seen/heard the upgraded system that Volvo sells for $1000. Any first hand impressions? How about after market? Can I get "stadard" audio system components that would fit into the V70 dash? I mean, the built-in stereo seems pretty much part of the whole dash.

Any advice (soon) would be appreciated.

Avi

by the upgraded in dash 4cd system and the subwoofer - if you try to change the standard radio with aftermarket - you're asking for lots of trouble with the electronics in the new v70.

The complexity of the car electronics has really nothing to do with an aftermarket audio system. Only Volvo's own radios are connected to the car's main computer system. That's why you have to get software updates for everything you add to a Volvo radio, because these tell the radio what to do. Basically this is just another money rip-off. I don't see any reason why the Volvo radio would separately have to be told whether it has eg. a CD-changer connected to it or not. Any aftermarket system notice this by itself.

When you replace the Volvo radio with an aftermarket one, you just have to get and adapter wire between the car's audio connector and the standard connector (DIN?) that the aftermarket units have. These adapter cables are available from aftermarket brands and Volvo. After this the power inlet, antenna, speakers etc. are available for the aftermarket unit.

The steering wheel buttons will however not work. At least I haven't yet heard of any aftermarket manufacturers that would have made an separate adapter for Volvo's steering wheel controls.

    Avi,

Are you running the SC-816 or its progeny?

I added to Volvo amp to my stock 816 w/no other modifications. The definition is better, especially in the mid-range. With ASC on, voice over music is much clearer, particularly at speed. Even the imaging seems finer.

BTW the THD is supposed to be around 10%. I don't know if that's true since I haven't got any specs. If so, you probably would be better off with 3d party equipment.

The pluses for me are 1) great price (unclaimed order), 2) very easy installation behind center console, and 3) totally stock look.

However, I obviously have low expectations, since I thought the stock system wasn't bad at all.

    Have fun,

    Bryan

How far do you want to go with the upgrade?

If you are willing to eventually spend a couple hundred or even more, you may want to have a custom dash designed to negate the integrated nature of the oe deck.

A very good auto sound shop will be able to construct a dash that can allow almost any deck you could ever want, including lcd screens to control the sound system, watch dvds, play playstation, use gps locators, etc.

The only reason I recommend this is because you'll probably want to run an aftermarket amp, subs, higher powered speakers, etc. And to do so, you'll probably require an aftermarket head unit. Thank goodness my 850 didn't require this. I spent way too much on sound upgrades without having to make an entire custom dash.

Re: what stereo upgrade options exist? S80 01

There's no need for a custom made dash as long as you don't want anything too exotic.

Volvo makes "dash frames" that replaces a Volvo head unit with a standard (DIN) sized opening for any aftermarket unit. These are available at least for the S60, new V70 and S80, but I'm pretty sure all models have them. The frame is made of the same plastic that the rest of the centre dash and has exactly the same form than the Volvo radio unit + whatever you have next to it eg. cupholder.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of one, but ask your Volvo dealer to show it from the accessories catalog they have for every model.

I'm getting one for my S80. I just haven't yet decided what aftermarket head unit, amp, subwoofer I'm going to get.

I'm looking to upgade the sound on my car too...

What upgrades have you done that didn't require replacing the stock head unit? Which Volvo head unit do you have?

Re: what stereo upgrade options exist? 850 1995

Actually, the first thing I did was gut the deck.

I went with an Alpine head unit with a digital input, and an Alpine 6 disc cd changer with a fire wire, fibre optic digital output.

A half year later, an Alpine 5 channel around 800W amp with a 10" PPI sub.

A half year later, I went with Alpine DDRive speakers, with custom mounted tweeters in ther black plastic on the inside of where the side view mirrors are. I did this for better imaging. You should never point tweeters directly at glass.

At about the same time, I blew my 10" PPI sub because the amp was pushing too much power through it. That's when I upgraded the subs to 2, 12" Pioneer Premier subs.

When I did the speakers, I upgraded the wiring as well as did quite a bit of noise insulation, did some sound absorption of negative sound. When I got the new subs, I continued with the sound absorption of negative sound and noise insulation and tightened up loose panels.

I see no reason why anyone should EVER keep the old deck if they care about getting very high fidelity, high quality, low noise etc. The only benefit in my opinion is less of a chance of getting broken into. People say the stock decks just look like they belong. But I think my Alpine deck looks way better. And being a single DIN, I can now use the other half of the opening.

I don't plan on doing anything else for a long time. The next big money will be spent on going faster. In a couple years, I may go with an LCD screen. But until then, I have absolutely no complaints.

Sin, in what I've garnered from chit chat about home audio, speakers are blown because they're getting *too little* power. In these cases, turning up the volume opens the gates on unclean power, in the amp's vain attempt to provide the volume.

Could this have been your scenario with the blown sub?

Re: what stereo upgrade options exist? 850 1995

That sometimes happens because when an amp is underpowered, as one tried to increase the volume, the noise to sound ratio increases rapidly at the clarity threshold. This noise causes the speaker to blow.

However, in my case, the continuity of the sub was lost because the cone literally ripped itself apart. I push over 300W into the sub channel, and the single 10" PPI was rated at 250@ RMW, with a peak of 325RMS. The new subs are both 400RMS, and wired in mono.
