Actually, the first thing I did was gut the deck.
I went with an Alpine head unit with a digital input, and an Alpine 6 disc cd changer with a fire wire, fibre optic digital output.
A half year later, an Alpine 5 channel around 800W amp with a 10" PPI sub.
A half year later, I went with Alpine DDRive speakers, with custom mounted tweeters in ther black plastic on the inside of where the side view mirrors are. I did this for better imaging. You should never point tweeters directly at glass.
At about the same time, I blew my 10" PPI sub because the amp was pushing too much power through it. That's when I upgraded the subs to 2, 12" Pioneer Premier subs.
When I did the speakers, I upgraded the wiring as well as did quite a bit of noise insulation, did some sound absorption of negative sound. When I got the new subs, I continued with the sound absorption of negative sound and noise insulation and tightened up loose panels.
I see no reason why anyone should EVER keep the old deck if they care about getting very high fidelity, high quality, low noise etc. The only benefit in my opinion is less of a chance of getting broken into. People say the stock decks just look like they belong. But I think my Alpine deck looks way better. And being a single DIN, I can now use the other half of the opening.
I don't plan on doing anything else for a long time. The next big money will be spent on going faster. In a couple years, I may go with an LCD screen. But until then, I have absolutely no complaints.
