Looking at potential 1994 850 purchase 850 1994

Hey all,

It's been a while since I've posted on the 850 board since I don't get to see or drive my '96 sedan much anymore (it's now with my father down in Florida).

I have been presented with the opportunity to purchase a 1994 850 sedan. This is a one-owner car and the main attraction for me is that it's a 5-speed (production date is 9/93). He's told me that he bought the car new in December '93 and has had the car serviced and maintained only at the dealer. It's cosmetically challenged but mechanically, everything is up to date. Car has 199k miles on it. How much should I offer the guy? I'm thinking maybe $600-$800. Suggestions welcomed.

A one owner is rare at that age, so the maintenance history should be good.

The 850 only has two design flaws, the auto tranny fluid must be changed on a regular basis. And the AC evaporator has a tendancy to leak.

I bought a 1996 854 NA with a 5 speed for $1000 and have put another $1,000 into it to make it dependable. It is a great car with about 160K miles.

The 1994 has the OBD ports in the engine compartment, which is a great plus! Diagnose anything and everything.

The body doesn't rust, both sides of all of the body panels have been galvanized. It is easy to repair, compared to other FWD cars, and the parts are much cheaper than the other European cars.

Timing belt is every 70K miles, water pump goes for about 200K.
The clutch can easily last 200K miles.

Kelly blue book for a basic 5 speed private sale is $1416 in good condition, $1016 in fair condition

For a loaded one - add leather, sunroof and alloys - $1651 in good condition - $1251

    Trade in is $606

You should go to KBB.com an price the proper car.

Many people look at KBB when selling.

I do know that high mileage scares away many buyers.

How much do you want to insult the guy?

The car in question has leather, Cold Weather Package, moonroof, and Argo alloy wheels.

It has resided in Northern Virginia its whole life (outside DC).

We have a 1995 850 turbo sedan we bought in 9/1994 (now with 200+k miles). Recently, it has been maintained by one of our wonderful forum colleagues. At this point, our car still runs really well and if I were to sell it, I think I would ask for much more than $800. Externally, it is in a very good shape (no rust), and it has been a northern Indiana/Chicago car all along. This car has been by far the best car I have ever driven for under $200k during the last 41+ years on both sides of the Atlantic and both sides of the Pacific.

Around here (Mass.) any car that runs and drives is worth at least $500. The scrap metal dealers will pay you $400-500 for a whole car running or not. I'd guess it's worth $600 minimum.
