Fuel sending unit (93) 850 1993

I'm fairly certain I need to replace my FSU, but I'm having a dickens of a time finding where to buy one online.

IPD doesn't seem to have it, and either does the place that I bought my struts from.

Am I using an incorrect search phrasing?

I did find this one, but I was wondering if it's a rare part to find.

If you look at part #5, it will look just like what you have now, for $86 + $10 shipping.

The new style sender that FCP and others have will work.

You didn't mention what is the problem with your current unit. Does it not work at all? Is it inconsistant with what level is in the tank? Do you know that the sender can be cleaned out and tested with an 0hm meter, so long as you open it up carefully? The sender electrical connecction is closer to the fuel pump, so removing the cover over the pump is required, if I remember correctly.

The fuel gauge only goes to about 6 gallons, no matter what the amount of gas is (above 6 gallons). once it gets below 6, it's somewhat accurate.

On occasion, especially after driving on a bumpy road, it will read accurately, until I re-fill it again once it gets below 6.

But most of the time it reads 6 gallons, and occasionally it'll stop below 6 if I fill up the tank below 6 gallons.

i.e., if it drops down below 6 and I fill, it stays there until a random time it'll reset to 6 gallons.

Inside the sending unit tube is a plastic float that slides up/down. The float has a copper wire in it which carries low current from the stem, creating variable resistance to your gauge.

Sounds like your float is stuck or someone put oily gasoline in your tank and coated the wires. With my 1994, I removed the sender tube, and just slid the float top to bottom multiple times by tilting the tube. That worked for me.

I also got a used sender tube from a junk yard for disassembly. I took off the aluminum casing, cleaned up the copper wire, put it back together, and now have a spare working sender.

Probably a rare part to find. My observation is that normally the sending unit is sold as a one piece assembly with the fuel pump and their related parts to the tune of $325!! This one is at FCP Groton (Euro).

Groton now offers the sending unit and the pump insert as seperate parts sold for a much more reasonable price. While you're in the tank you might consider replacing some of the other parts. I had to replace the sending unit on my 240 so since I was in there anyway, I replaced the pump and all the other related parts as that wasn't a job I wanted to do twice...:)

OTOH - after reviewing the pump replacement job (I might need a new pump) in my Haynes, it looks much easier in an 850 than in a 240 so going back into the tank a second time might not be such a big deal.

I don't know how hard they are to find, but you found one.
And you can rest assured that FCP's prices are very competitive AND their customer service is superb. The recently rededicated themselves to an L.L.Bean-like commitment to customer satisfaction. Not to be abused of course. Lets be fair and we'll all be better off. I love the guys at FCP. Just call them up if you have a problem and talk with them...they've been doing Volvo parts a long time and have guys with know-how. You owe it to yourself to check out their DIY videos on Youtube. Really good.
And no I don't work for them or have any connection. Just a Volvo customer.
