Xenon bulbs........Safe??? 850 1997

Does anyone know whether or not the Xenon bulbs for sale on Ebay are a good idea??? They claim to fit 850's and work with the stock wiring. Something just doesn't sound right.....

I heard they burn hotter etc.

Tell me what you think...

Thanks!!

Re: Xenon bulbs........Safe??? 850 1997

In most cases, those "Xenon blue bulbs" (ie. fake xenon gas discharge bulbs) are not a good idea. If they are of higher wattage than the stock bulbs (I think OEM is 51 watts) then stay away from them. Even if they were of similar wattage to the OEM (like say 55 watts) I'd be cautious. Here's something to think about: I went through a set of damn expensive PIAAs in just a little over a year and another japanese made set in less than 3 months. It's really a hit and miss thing--if you're lucky, they'll last just as long as the OEM bulbs but from my experience, they just plain suck (at least on my car).

Congratulations! You've just thrown your money out to the wind.

1. ALL so called "Xenon" drop-in replacements are bogus.

2. ALL coated bulbs (blue, yellow, dichroic or what have you) are INFERIOR to clear bulbs of the same wattage.

Those claiming otherwise either are crooks making money on that or ignorant people (unfamiliar with elementary physics) making those crooks rich.

This topic has been discussed here countless times - just run a search through the BB archives.

Best advice - stay with OEM or get a pair of Philips VisionPlus (uncoated! - no gimmick). Philips is an OEM for Volvo.

Vadim.

Re: Xenon bulbs........Safe??? 850 1997

Agreed!

The Philips VisionPlus does provide a better quality light at the stock voltage of 55w. I've had mine for six months w/DRL's and they're still burning bright.

The Asian import 70w dichroics (badged Hella) were junk and wouldn't last more than a couple months. Besides putting out inferior light, the higher wattage may damage the car's wiring.

OEM or Philips only.

Where is a good source to purchase the Philips bulbs?

FosmoLamps online.

They have the Philips VisionPlus H-7's sold by the pair. I believe they are $40. US including S&H. Usually takes about 5 business days to arrive.
