new cat and muffler air pump question 850

hi all:

Just wanted to say i replaced my 20 year old exhaust system due to holes/leaks. It couldn't be welded anymore. I got a 146.00 DEC cat off ebay and a 226.00 starla muffler off ebay. I used a volvo clamp from the dealer at about 20.00. Seems to be running fine. I know my air pump doesn't work anymore so i'm wondering if this will cause real problems for the cat or if I will be polluting more?

new cat and muffler air pump question 850

The EGR system went the way of the dinosaur after 1995. How could a single hole in the #1 exhaust port suck out all of the unburned exhaust gases created by 5 cylinders and make the engine cleaner burning?

My suggestion is to find a way to eliminate the EGR system. Plug the hole at the exhaust. Leave the electrical systems in place (sensors, solenoids, etc) and fake out the system by replacing the pump with a resistor. How to do that is beyond me... I just enjoyed removing the SAS system from my 1996, which pumps air into the exhaust during cold starts - a 2 minute excercise to 'help' a rich running cold engine.

thanks Klause. I think on my 94 there is a hole on the top of the engine that the air pump blows extra air into the manifold to help on cold starts to help the cat burn the unburned fuel. this is why i was thinking the cat could get too hot with out the air pump. But, as you say, they did away with the system later anyway. It's a big expense to replace the system. Think I will replace the oxygen sensor and spark plugs and just call it good. Have a great new year year.
