ETM electronic throttle module V70-XC70 1999

On my 1999 V70XC AWD (136,000 miles) I had the ETM replaced. It ran fine for a couple of days but then the hard idling and going into limp mode came back. I could get it to run ok for two or three times by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes. After several hours of the dealership mechanic diagnosing (he kept saying Communications Fault), he said the replacement ETM was defective and put on another new one. It ran fine for a week and now the ETS light is occasionally blinking when the car idles after running for a while. Is there something causing these ETMs to go out? Thank you in advance.

    What problem V70-XC70 1999

Who are you and why do you use a new ID every time you post a message?

BTW, there is no Autaugaville, IL. Only in Alabama. And there is no Volvo dealer close by.

      What problem V70-XC70 1999

This is the only ID I have and have ever used.

Sorry about the city error. It's updated now.

        ETM replaced V70-XC70 1999

So, your recourse is to return to the dealer and have him replace it again. Ask to see the error codes before the replacement, there should be a couple.

going to xemodex.com would have been much cheaper and better.

As to my prior post, this is your first time on the board, and welcome. There is someone who posts from Atuguaville, always a single post and never a reply. Kind of makes me wonder...

          ETM replaced V70-XC70 1999

Thank you very much for the sound advice. I made an appointment with the dealership for next week and I will ask for the error codes. It still strikes me as odd that I could end up with two defective throttle modules in a row.

            ETM replaced V70-XC70 1999

A volvo dealer will not give you any options on an older car, his job is not to repair, but to replace parts with new until the job is done. He might find that the throttle position switch is at fault and replace that also.

Check the label on your current ETM, it should be yellow. The white labled ones were defective. I wonder if the mechanic also cleaned the throttle body while he was in there - it is needed.

There is also the condition of the plug at the ETM, it could be loose. Check that yourself. There is a metal clip that can get deformed and refuse to clamp properly.

              ETM replaced V70-XC70 1999

I went to Auto Zone today to have them scan for codes. They found none. The ETS light has not blinked in over a week and the car is running fine. I am thinking about cancelling my Tuesday appointment at the dealership because they are famous for fixing things that don't need fixing. Sensible? Many thanks.

              ETM replaced V70-XC70 1999

Due to a family issue, I had to postpone my appointment with the mechanic until Tuesday. The ETS light has not even blinked for several days now and it is running well. However, this morning while the car was warming up and I was scraping the ice off of the windshield, I noticed a strong smell of gas. It dissipated quickly but was concerning. Thank you again.

              ETM replaced V70-XC70 1999

The original ETM had a white label; the two subsequent ones were yellow. The mechanic said he thoroughly cleaned the throttle body--took off the intake manifold to do it. The plug seems well connected.
I take it to the dealership mechanic tomorrow and will be sure to get the error codes.
              Thank you very much.
