Air Conditioning cuts out after ten minutes 850 1995

A.C. cuts out after cooling for approximately 10 minutes when driving car.

Until it cuts out, it cools great, and then the compressor clutch disengages, blower in dash keeps blowing. I belive the charge is okay since the line is cool/covered with moisture back to the compressor (no icing). Car shows no sign of overheating during operation. The A.C. will only come back on after the switch is left off for approximately 10 minutes. If left on, it won't come back on by itself. Is this possibly a defective compressor thermal switch?

Thanks,

Murray

It could be the switch but I would still check the refrigerant level. When working, how often does the comp cycle?

I don't know how often it cycles. It is a hard to tell when in the car. I can tell that the compressor is disengaged by looking with the hood up after the air starts blowing warm. Would it still cool well if the refrigerant level is low? Also, wouldn't it cut back in by itself once it cools down?

Re: Air Conditioning cuts out after ten minutes 850 1995

I had a very similar experience with mine last summer. The A/C still cooled but I could hear from inside the car the compressor cycling rapidly, like every 5 seconds or so. I also had an instance where it blew warm air and I had to shut if off for a while. Your problem could very well be the switch but it could also be low on refrigerant. Some have advised to jump the switch but I think that kind of defeats the purpose for having it. Just my opinion, but I would get a recharge kit for $30 or so and recharge the system using the instructions with the kit and the Haynes manual. It is very easy to do. Then, at least you can eliminate low refrigerant as a potential problem.
