throttle sticking at slow speeds 850 1994

My 850 1994 Volvo throttle seems to "catch" or stick when traveling at lower rates of speed--I have to push the gas pedal more than necessary to get it past the "catch". Any help?

Re: throttle sticking at slow speeds 850 1994

On fuel injected cars the throttle plate will have a build-up

of "gunk" (there is no fuel in the intake air charge to help

keep things clean). You should clean the throttle body every

now and then (I do mine annually). Pull of the plastic boot that

feeds the throttle body and have a look. You will probably fine

a ring of black "gunk" that causes the throttle plate to catch.

You can wipe it off with a rag and mild solvent.

You also want to clean the flame trap while you are in there.

This (great) site has the instructions along with photos:

Re: throttle sticking at slow speeds 850 1997

Hi:

The dealer (Volvo Villa) did the throttle body clean up in a rush, as they missed the repair order, but still chargedme for CAn $55+. The worse thing is it works for 5 mnoths then it is sticking again. Any ideal why it happen so offen in my car (Canadian). Driving habbit or Canadian winter ?

Is it preety safe that you can clean it yourself as you descript and I print out the pictures from the link too. I mean I won't not mess up the car for sudden self acceralation, as one owner recently reported.

Thanks

Peter

Re: throttle sticking at slow speeds 850 1997

My '95 850 stuck routinely at slows speeds. I had it cleaned and it would

begin sticking after ~3000 or ~4000 miles. My recently purchased used '97

850 is starting to stick as well. I have put ~3000 miles on it since I

bought it. I live in central Tx. Mostly warm winters and mostly blistering hot suumers. I drive only 3 miles one way to work. Driving habit? I do drive it on the weekends a lot though. Seems the throttle

body should looked at the same interval as changing the oil.

Don't think so. I put 2k miles every month and I also have the problem. I bought the car 14 months ago. It now has 185k miles.

I'd say worse than changing the oil. I change the oil every 8k miles (Volvo recommends every 10k miles).

Re: throttle sticking at slow speeds 850 1997

I have the same problem. The cleaning works for maybe 4,000 miles and it's back to sticking.

I did the cleaning myself (easy job). It's not that dirty when I cleaned it (heck, how dirty can it be in 10k miles?). My 91 Buick Century is also fuel injector's and I have never cleaned it until last year and it's much more dirtier but never sticks. So, I think it's something else that causes the problem.

Someone on the board says it may be the EGR valve. This has to be verified by him after he put some miles on it.

Cleaning the throttle body may help.

I have got the same problem at the moment i cleaned the throttle body and no difference.

Anyway i unplugged the air idle control valve situated obove the trottle housing and the problem has gone.

BEWARE My engine manegment light is on now So do this at your own risk

Re: throttle sticking at slow speeds 850 1996

Hmmm.. That is very interesting. Can you be more specific what you unplugged? Did you read the check engine code to find out what it is?

Do you notice any performance/drivability problem after unplugging it?

Thanks.
