dave the volvo tech or John o 850 1993

Dave and/or John: A friend of my has a 93 850 GLT with 150,000 miles on the OD. Here's the problem. He noticed oil leaking from the front of the engine. I've investigated and found that the breather hose is severed where it connects to the oil trap (not the flame trap), which is under the intake manifold in close proximity to the receiver dryer (The oil trap is attached to the block - it is a black container about six inches long - I'm sure you know what this is). Sorry for the long explanation. In essence, everything is being vented directly into the environment instead of circulating up to the flame trap connection. This is making quite a mess down to the oil pan. My question is, can I gain access to the oil trap from under the car to reconnect/replace this hose from the bottom of the engine with the plastic shield/liner removed? Or, will I have to remove the intake manifild to gain access to the oil trap. Also, do you think I should also replace the oil trap and the other hose that connects the oil trap to the block/crankcase at this juncture? Thanks in advance for your valued opinions and assistance.

BOU BOU-

There was actually a campaign on the breather hose for the '93 850. Your freindly local dealer may possibly replace the tube and both elbows at no charge if the campaign has not been done on this particular car. We had a hook tool to install the pipe without removing the manifold, but it was a major pain to get the old piece off and the new piece on. Check with the dealer first, and if they won't fix it for free, at least get the kit from them. The kit has elbows made out of an improved material.

Dave: Thanks a million for your response and expertise. I'll let you know how we make out on this one. Actually, this car belongs to a friend of mine and I try to help him as much as possible. My 93 runs great at 144,400 with the original trans. I've been using synthetics in the trans and engine for the last 25,000 miles. Engine runs beautifully and uses no oil between 3,000 mile changes. You are obviously a great asset to all of us on this board. Keep up the good work.

With appreciation,

Bou Bou

DAve: You were absolute right on the money with that campaign on the oil trap hose and two elbows. We checked the local dealership and they informed us that the car in question did not have the service performed. They said the work will be covered by Volvo. That's great news! All thanks to you, my friend; we really appreciate your assistance. I also had the vin run on my 93 850 and fortunately mine had already been done quite a few years back. Thanks, thanks and thanks.

Some of the cars have slipped through the cracks on the campaign. Still see the occasional car that has open recalls YEARS after they should have been done. Any dealer can check the VIN to see if any apply. Glad I could help and spare you the hassle and expense.

FWIW

The oil separator (oil trap?) is accessed by removing the intake manifold first. You can then replace the upper hose. Also check that the oil trap seal at the cylinder block is not leaking as well...

Re: Simple Oil Trap Question 850 1993

Does the oil trap ever need to be serviced or replaced?

If one of the rubber connectors has all but fallen apart should I worry about any others?

Tony: Thanks for your response. I was afraid that removing the intake manifold would be the answer. Not what I wanted to hear. Regards.
