Air filter removal question V70-XC70 2001

Air filter removal question

Living out in the woods our cars a plagued by mice. They especially like getting into the air filter boxes. Well, I usually put hardware cloth in the air box to stop them from making a nest out of the filter element.

I’m trying to get my air filter out of an 2001 XC and am having troubles, perhaps someone could help. I’ve unsnapped the three clips in front and disconnected the sensor wire connected to the air intake. But the cover won’t come off. It seems that there are three tabs in the rear that slide out. The tabs at each end move but the middle tab isn’t budging.

Any hints and/or techniques to removing the air filter cover.

PS: One of the front clamps broke while I was re-closing the cover, very brittle and thin plastic used in the clamps!

Thanks

That filter set up is loved by all Volvo techs (not), you have done everything right you just need to lift up on the front to get the back ones unhooked, it's event more fun putting it back in and getting the back ones to grab. The design must have looked good on paper, but in real life it has something to be desired.

First of all, I don't think you should be using hard ware cloth in the air box. Try covering up the air intake at the front, just behind the grill with something like a wooden block and a clamp around the plastic to hold it in place.

You should have three clips on the front of the box, one clip on each side, and three more on the back side. If you are having problems reaching them, try using a long screwdriver, with the tip wrapped in cloth, being careful to not damage the clips or anything else.
