Movement felt in steering wheel S80 2000

I have a 2000 S80 T6 12000 miles. On normal acceleration away from a stop I'm detecting some movement being transferred through the steering column. At times you can even hear this movement. It feels as if something in the front end is loose. This movement can also be felt when braking. This has not been diagnosed at the dealer yet, I was hoping to get some opinions.

I know this is a limited description of the problem, but does this sound familiar to anyone? Car has DSTC and movement occurs whether it is on or off.

Re: Movement felt in steering wheel S80 2000

This is a known problem and a service bulletin was recently released regarding this issue. The repair involves removeing the lower steering shaft and installing a special type of grease.

Re: Movement felt in steering wheel S80 99

Hi, I'm on my second modified joint and have had the special grease added but to no avail as the knocking has returned after 500 miles yet again. I'm on my second dealer, who are better than the first but they now say it's back to Volvo! 99 S80 turbo diesel 17000 miles

Re: Movement felt in steering wheel V70-XC70 2000

    Hi Mark,

Do you hear any noise when you feel the movement? My 2000 V70XC will be in the shop in about 2 weeks for a front axle lock-tite update. My symptoms are as you described with a creeking noise. Can you reproduce this by standing still and shifting your transmission from "D" to "R", then back to "D" and so on? If so, there is too much play where axle splines go into the front hubs. The fix is to remove the axle from the hub, apply a greeb lock-tite supplied by Volvo and retorque the bolt that holds the axle to the hub. I don't know if the S80 has this TSB though or if it ever have a similar axle setup like the V70 (which I doubt), so it might be the steering column problem related to the S80 (look in the archives, you might find something relevant)

    Good luck!
