Is the sound after you have shut the engine off and then started the car. I have the same noise every time I cycle the key. Sounds like a rattle ususally just before or right after the tranny shifts, if that is the noise I am told by an independent Volvo shop, one that is well respected in my community that it is the ABS pump doing it's check.

      Hi,

Just to make things clear, the ABS system will check the system when it come for the first time since you start the car at 30km/h. At this time, you will notice a sound comming from the front wheel (driver side) that is like metal friction. You can look in your owner manual, they tell you that it's normal.

    Hi Shawn,

i live in ireland where a person would need to own a group N rally car to use it on the roads over here,i have a 96 T5 and i have 2 problems similar to your own the first one was a broken antiroll bar it sounds like an aluminium/tin tapping sound. The other was a cover over the back box which over bumpy roads would make a rattling sound .

hope this is of some help.

    regards

    jason keely
