Rotors and pads---need help (kinda long) C70 1998

Hi folks,

Well, it's time for me to change brake pads again soon (they are on 30% now). I've asked in a previous thread about the pads and recommendations were PBR pads from IPD. Should I use the metallics or the deluxes? ALso, is there a place where I can get them cheaper? Furthermore, my dealer told me that my front rotors were undersized (that's what it says on the printout) and that I need to change them. First of all, I didn't know that rotors can be undersized. Do I need to change them or can I just resurface them or something? Also, are the slotted rotors from IPD any good (since I heard they are more prone to warping. I need to know cuz I drive and brake hard!). How much do stock rotors cost? IPD sells the Brembo ones for 72.00 but Volvoparts.com sells them for 57.00. Are these the same rotors. Sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance.

Mike H.

Re: Rotors and pads---need help (kinda long) C70 1998

I would stick to stock brake components. After-market pads may

have problems with squeeling (frequently reported) and may not

provide as short stopping distance (sometimes reported here).

Are you specifically trying to address something about the stock

brakes you don't like? If they work well enough for you then I'd

stick with stock parts.

Undersize means the rotor thickness has worn down (pads and

rotors both wear). Feel around near the outer edge of the

rotor and you will feel a lip. When new, the rotors were

flat and there was no lip -- that is the amount of wear.

(The amount of wear is surprising and you have to double what

you feel since the other side is worn, too).

Rotors typically last for 2 pad changes. Volvo rotors should

not be turned -- just replace them.

Ray,

Thanks for your input. I guess I'll just stick with stock components then. One of these days I'll eventually upgrade to a big brake kit but till then, stocks should do. Thanks again.

minimum rotor thickness is 23mm. Also, if they're below 23.8mm when changing pads, they should be replaced.
