Tire inflation rate for 17" tire on S40 S40-V40 2001

Does anyone knows what's the proper psi rate for 215/40R17 on S40?

The maximum I would use is:

Front: 2.6 bar / 38 psi

Rear: 2.4 bar / 35 psi

This setting is in the european user manual for long high-speed (100+mph) cruising, but it does work very well under all conditions on my T4 with 215/40R17 and Volvo sport suspension.

The 'default' pressure of 33 psi front and 30 psi rear is too little with 17" wheels/tires and you can feel the tire walls compressing and sometimes the rim touching on sharp bumps. No such problems with 38 psi front 35 psi rear.

Even higher pressure than that will make the handling a bit tricky as it will understeer quite a bit and the S/V40's already do that enough as it is.

You also want to keep the 0.2 bar / 3 psi front/rear difference to maintain a steady behaviour in the corners. When I push my car in a long curve it will slowly drift across all 4 wheels once I get to the limit. No surprises.

Bye, Arno.

What is the recommended inflation for 16" wheels (205/50-16)?

Did you keep the 16" long on your car to play with proper pressure?

My owners-manual does not distinguish between the different tire/wheel types. Should not be needed anyway as the tires are supposed to have the identical load-rating.

My T4 came with 205/55R15, but I only had them on long enough to drive to the tire/wheel shop :-)

On my 2.0T I use the same tire pressures as on the T4. It has the standard 205/55R15 and the 38/35psi setting works well for that one too. Standard suspension as well.

Both cars are on Toyo Proxes T1-S tires though, which are pretty smooth on rough(er) roads by themselves. So I don't need to fiddle with pressures for comfort settings, only for handling/feel/safety characteristics.

Bye, Arno.

40 psi should be good a little less if you want it to ride smoother
