My friend's 98 V70 XC needs a new steering rack to fix the front axle alignment (sez an indie shop). Is the shop FOS or not, if so what does it take to replace the rack? Is it something we can do in a driveway?

Excuse me, but the rack uses hydraulic fluid to push the steering arms from side to side. The arms have adjustments on them.

I suggest finding a local shop that only does alignments. Not a tire shop, but an honest-to-god alignment shop. You know, one that the indies bring cars because few shops can afford an alignment machine.

As for replacing a rack in a driveway, be prepared for a stationary car for a couple of days. It is a heck of a job!
