V70xc AWD brake & ebrake cables cut (friend's car) V70-XC70 2003

So.... my friend's 2003 (I think) V70xc awd had its hard steel brake line cut just before the rubber hose on the rear passenger side. The e-brake cable was also cut. Obviously something malicious happened, but right now I'm wondering how to replace the line for her.

So, I traced the line, but can't really tell where it goes or where the junction block (if there is one) goes. There are 3 lines from the front ABS unit, which I assume means 1 for each front wheel and 1 to the rear where it's split into 2 other lines.

Where does the hardline run? Do I have to drop the fuel tank to replace it? Do these come pre-bent, or should I buy some of the soft steel hand-bendable lines from napa or something? It looks like it has an awful lot of bends to replicate by hand.

How about the e-brake cable? Do I need to replace it all the way to the brake handle, or does it just go across to the top of the axle like on a 700?

Cheers...

PS there are a couple other issues, but I'll post about those separately

    Will,

I don't know the exact answer, but I think it is likely that the brake line is one piece from front to rear. I'm working on a Benz that is set up that way. Maybe you should conider just replacing a short piece of it by flaring the line ends and and using a union. If Volvo flare type is not odd, you could likely buy a line a NAPA or the like that will fit the junction at the rubber line, and then only need one union and only have to do one flare where you do the clean cut to the remaining line.

If you don't have brake flare tools, Autozone probably have them in their tool loan department (assuming you have Autozone in your region).

Sorry, no clue on the e-brake.

    Charley

    It's a 1998, not 2003.

I can't even find the hard line listed at ipd, fcp, or rockauto.

    Anybody?

Only dealers have the hard lines, so little demand.

I agree, try at the local autoparts store. Get a short piece of line, 2 couplings, flare all 4 ends, and join them.

IPD sells a brake cable, it goes from the center console to the the rear brake housing. Under the rear carpet is a plastic hold down thingy, pry it up off the screw to get the plastic off the brake line. There is a torx screw holding the line under the C pillar. The cable housing pulls off the brake housing to expose the connector to the parking brake levers. You do not need to pull off the rear rotor.

The above takes about 1.5 hours, much cussing, and at least one band aid.

I hope this was reported to the police. Someone wanted her to crash.

I was thinking about just that - patching them. I've never flared lines before though. Don't have the tools or anything to do it. The one end is pretty crimped - that's the only reason her brakes worked as long as they did.

Is there a junction block? I think there must be because there's 1 line going to the rear from the front, but two in the back. The only place I can figure it is is on top of the car.

I'm way more concerned with the hydraulic line.

Where is the C pillar? Just the third pillar back?

On my 1996 854, the rear brake line is on the driver's side. It splits to two lines just behind the tank, forward of the front wheel and above the swing arm.

You should be able to remove the line and have an autoparts store bend and flare a new one. I am lazy and would pay a dealer $200 to do it for me, along with flushing the fluid.

A junk yard might also be an option????? Those lines seldom get hurt or rusty and would be a much easier job for DIY.

A pillar in front, B behind the driver, C behind the passenger, and D for station wagons.
