Cooling fan runs when car starts.....stays on when engine running

06 s80 AWD turbo... 135 miles.

From cold start the cooling fan immediately turns on. This does not seem normal. Isn't the fan regulated by a temperature switch?

If you shut it down immediately, before it warms up, the fan stays on for several minutes.

In normal driving, at idle, the fan is either off or running depending on the engine temperature.

Where is the switch and can I test it?

Involved in the fan control are the components:

6/29 - Fan unit (obviously not the problem here)

4/71 - Fan control module (located with the fan motor)

7/8 - Pressure sensor, climate control system (located somewhere on or near the A/C condenser. I can't remember exactly where. Look for violet/white and brown/purple wires.)

7/16 - Coolant temp sensor (located near engine thermostat. green/red and brown/black wires)

I wouldn't suspect 6/29 as you know the fan motor works, nor would I suspect 7/16 if the engine temp gauge and everything else works OK.

4/71 or 7/8 would be my main suspects. If it's 4/71, the fan control module, it's sold as a complete assembly with the fan motor. ($$$) maybe a pick-n-pull yard would have one.

    Good luck!
