motor oil S40-V40 2000

Hello people

taking the 'what oil is in your volvo' got me a little curious. I just went for my 1st service (10 000km) and I took with me castrol slx 0W-30 (the workshop said they needed 5litres)

checked with castrol and they said it should be fine to use the slx on S40 2.0T but because of the thin oil - some noise will be heard coming from the hydraulic tappets in the engine.

i have found the car to be smoother but notice that the engine noise may be a little harsher than before (my imagination?)

Anyhow any experience like this? btw, i live in a tropical country - avg temp is 34-37C.

Many thanks in advance

My Volvo Dealer in Canada swears by Synthetic oil (who happens to race turbo-charged cars) and will use only synthetics on all oil changes in volvos. He explains that synthetic oil works at coating engine parts better and dissipating heat a turbo produces and oil does not break-down in extremme temps and sludge up your engine.

    I know I am biased:

I don't know about the Castrol 0W-30, but the folks that have switched to the Amsoil Series 2000 0W-30 have reported their cars to be quieter. Especially on cars known to be a tad noisy on start up such as the white motor Volvo cars and some overhead cam GM cars that have "hydraulic tappets".

I noticed a difference when I added the Mobil 1 oil to my car, the valves sound "loose" and like they're tapping. I attribute this to the oil. Anyone else have any opinions on this?

seems that the thinner oil doesn't buffer / absorb the sound(s) in the engine as well as thicker ones. I wonder if it gives better protection?

Someone once remarked that the larger the range of the oil rating, the more polymers they add in to achieve that which could translate to possible problems when the oil breaksdown. Am I right here or am I rambling on?

        Re: motor oil S40-V40 2000

You're right about wider viscocity ranges having more polymers to allow for more molecule flex under wider temperature ranges. However, I've read it is recommended not to use oils with a range wider than 20, 10w-30 vs 10w-40 or 20w-50. Although 5w-30 probably isn't so bad if you really need it. The problem is with sludge build up. If you use a quality oil it may not be a big deal to use a 5w-30 or even a 0w-30 or 10w-40 for that matter. Try to use seasonal oils... For example, in the winter I switched to 5w-30, espcially since we were driving further north to north central WI with temps that got as low as -26F. In the late spring/early summer, i'll switch back to 10w-30. Synthetic of course also helps, especially in turbos.

I noticed the same thing when I added Mobile 1 synthetic.

Well i'll be up for an oil change soon. I'm probably going to add some Bardhal 1 additive I get from down south. Just for the record I used 5W30.

I tried Mobil 1 0W30 this past winter in my 2000 V40 instead of the usual 5W30. It got about .1 mpg better mileage and burnt up about 1 quart over about 2000 miles. It doesn't burn 5W30.
