"Noise' from rear while in reverse V70-XC70 2003

OK, so here we are in Montana on holidays & while in a parking lot yesterday I put the car in reverse to back out out of a parking stall. There was an ominous sound coming from the rear end(definitely not the tranny) while backing out. Sounds like something is loose.....could it this a bad bearing on the rear propeller shaft? This "sound" happens only when in reverse.
Thanks,
Rich

Not hearing the sound yours is making makes this tough, but my wife owns a 2003 XC that 6 months ago made a rattling sound. Turned out to be parking brake pad had broken free and was the source of the problem.. good luck

Usually, when the center bearing starts to go, it will make noise in either direction. The carrier bearing is surrounded by rubber, perhaps that has cracked and allowing movement?
