Front end noises S80 2000

I am beginning to experience front end noise on my 2000 S80 with 18,000 miles. I hear a rattle/creak something like a loose shock when I go over moderate bumps at low speed. Also, I hear similar noise turning steering wheel to right at very low speed or at dead stop. This noise sounds more like it originates at the base of the steering wheel... with less rattle and more like a creak/groan/rub. Finally, I'm noticing that car drifts to left on the highway and requires enough back pressure on steering wheel to be uncomfortable.

Tire pressure (17" wheels) is fine. Tires have been rotated for 2nd time. Drifting to left happened when I first took delivery and cause was said to be rear wheel misalignment. Alignment cured the problem before but now it has returned.

Anyone care to diagnose? Suggestions? Thanks.

Re: Front end noises S80 2000

Yup, I had the same problem, and my dealer neftin in thousand oaks california, says that its in my head, well, they can't hear the noise, they have started to say that it is characteristic of the car... that i bul* *t... It is a manufacturing defect.. the sound went away after one technician, that at this place they work on commision...???? a mechanic? i have never heard of this. any way, he took that cover on the bottom, and tightend the air box, then he placed the cover back, and the sound went away, that one that is made a low speeds.... as for the drift, i bet your car is 1/4 in toe in... i just replaced my tires cause the alighnment from the factory was off, i had 35k miles on by then, so now it is perfect, and i spent 1000.00 on tires... i told them about this a couple weeks afeter i bought this car, and they said that they could not duplicate the drift... well...whatever... if it wasn't for the dealer denying what is obviouse to me, and others like yourself, i would buy another volvo, but never again...

I am sorry that you are having this trouble also, try nagging your dealer, and maybe they will find a fix....

by the way, the noise when you turn the wheels at a slow speed is the shock and springs, both front and rear, looks like they need lubricating often, i still am trying to have them do it... they claim that its another characteristic, funny how the loadner s80 t6 with 40k miles on it does not have any of these things wrong....

I had a thumping in mine. The dealer replaced the subframe bushings and lower ball joints, no more problems noticed. If tire pressure and wear is good, alignment is probably your problem, get it aligned again. This was done at 25K at Calabassas Motorcars in So Cal.

At 18,500 miles dealer removed & replaced faulty front stabilzer uplinks. Noise is completly gone.

Drift to left and shimmy at 75mph were attributed to wheels out of balance. Alignment was perfect. Although I had my tires rotated faithfully every 7,500 miles I ASSUMED dealer was also balancing them with each rotation. He wasn't! Shame on me.

Old dealer say they never balance unless customer has an obvious complaint. I now have a new dealer who is willing to protect me from myself as well as provide professional level service. And I now have a $45,000 car that no longer sounds like a Chevy Caprice with 175K.

        The AM radio still sucks!!!
