High-pitched whine when cold, sometimes when warm V70-XC70 1998

I hear a high-pitched whine in my 1998 V70 AWD w/ 158K miles when the engine is cold. It lasts about a minute (it does not get louder with acceleration), and then generally stops. Sometimes it will do it again at idle (stoplights, traffic, etc.). I am wondering if it might be the air pump--for some reason, I seem to remember having read something about air pumps causing high-pitched whines. If so, does it need replacement? What does the air pump actually do, anyway?

Thanks

That is the Secondary Air injection System (SAS) pumping fresh air into the exhaust. It is only supposed to run when the engine is cold and then for about 2 minutes max. The pump is expensive, so is diagnostics at the dealer. The pump is under the battery tray.

Most SAS systems fail due to a bad oneway valve on the line leading to the exhaust manifold.
