Radio light bulbs 850 1994

Looking for a second opinion. I have a stock radio that two of the bulbs are burned out in the AM-FM selection button area (lower right on the radio). The dealer said he did not have part numbers for the bulbs and that the fix was to swap out the radio, to the tune of $150.00, installing a refurbished unit and turning mine in. Has Volvo really taken the design approach that you must swap out the radio to replace burned out bulbs? I have not yet removed the radio to see if it looks like one can open it up. Any comments and input is appreciated.

Re: Radio light bulbs 850 1994

    Harrison,

I had the radio apart years ago looking at the same situation...the bulbs are soldered into place on the back side of a large circuit board. If I remember (and I'm handy wilth a soldering iron) the job seemed difficult with the access very limited. Any pro-auto shop specializing in sound should be able to do the job for you...I chose to live with the two burnt out bulbs, if and when more burn out, I'll then have it repaired.
