Will Not Start S70 1999

I have a '99 S70 N/A with 16,500 miles. All of the scheduled maintenance are current on this vehicle including the recent replacement of spark plugs, rotor, cap and plug wires. Recently, I have been experiencing difficulty starting the vehicle. Sometimes this anamoly occurs when the vehicle has been run and at other times when it sits overnight (no particular pattern). This morning I noticed that when the key was turned to position II all the dash lights came as normal, however, the alarm LED near the windshield was blinking very rapidly. I have never notice this before because this was the first time I started the vehicle in the semi-darkness of my garage. Please keep in mind that the alarm was not armed and that all the doors and hatches were closed securely. Anyway, each time the vehicle failed to start, the LED was blinking rapidly while the key was in position II. I would usually let the vehicle sit for 30-60 seconds before attempting another crank. When it did start, the alarm LED remained off while the key was in position II and the vehicle immediately started. On those occasions that the vehicle does not start, it would initially appear like fuel starvation or no spark. The engine just constantly turns without starting. However, when the vehicle does start, it is a clean start. In other words, no indication of unburnt or excess fuel, no sputtering. Just a smooth start. Could this anamoly be associated with the alarm system and the engine immobilizer? I will be taking the vehicle in to the dealer on Monday.

Just out of curiosity: why, at 16.5 K miles did you replace cap, rotor, spark plugs and spark plug wires? These things don't need to be changed at least until 30K. Did you have ignition issues before or is this the first time?

Re: Will Not Start S70 1999

      Vladimir,

Thanks for your response. The vehicle was brought into the dealer previously for this problem. At that time, I was told that it was related to the "lawn mower" syndrome. The service representative told me that they replaced those components. However, I think the only thing that was replaced was the plugs. The reason I believe this is that the vehicle does not have the traditional spark plug wires. It has an electrical harness that attaches to each plug through an electronic module that mounts directly above the plug. Looks like an expensive array of equipment to arbitrarily replace especially since I wasn't charged for anything. This is why I believe that if they did replace anything, it would be the least expensive part that is also less time consuming. I think that the service representative might have been a little askew when he told me that all those items were changed free of charge. I am cautiously refraining from saying anything deragatory because I believe their intentions are sincere and so far the service that I have received has been nothing less than superb. I did look at the plugs this weekend and yes, they are very new. The car goes in to the dealer today, I will let you know what they find.

Mark, sounds like you have the ditributorless version of ignition. Please keep the board posted as to the results of the trip to the dealer.

Sounds indeed like the immobilizer failed to read the code from the key and it inhibited the start.

Do you have more keys or (active) badges on your keyring/chain? They can give interference. Try starting with the car key separately.

Perhaps try the second key you goth with the car?

    Bye, Arno.
