Door unlock with key doesn't 850 1996

What fun! I lock the car by turning the key to the right (no remote), then turn the key to the left and the driver's door unlocks most of the time. If I turn it again to unlock the rest of the car, all of the buttons pop up but when I relax the key, ALL of the doors lock again!!

I guess it is time to remove the door panel again and take a look.

Even if I hold on to the button to keep it from going down, the other doors lock.

Tonight I was playing around, the driver's window rolled down, and locked the car. When I unlocked it to the first position, it unlocked and then immediately relocked. What nerve! Reaching in to unlock the doors at the dash switch didn't do anything, the car must be unlocked before the switch works.

I did find out that the alarm works!! Thankfully, the horn is inop!

Any ideas????? Shortcuts????

If the button on the driver's door comes up and I don't try to unlock the rest of the car with the key, I can push the unlock switch on the dash and all is well.

A good mechanic once told me that Volvo switches are a weak link.

Perhaps the lock switch in the dash is shorted.

Pull it out and disconnect it.

You got it! Because the switch would lock/unlock the doors, I had assumed all was OK with it. Not so. I did as you suggested and unplugged the dash switch and the key now works as designed!!

Another item to be added to the pick&pull list before I take the switch apart and see what is wrong with it.

      Thanks a lot!

        Dash switch? What dash switch?
Is that a 1996 feature? Nothing like that on our '95.

1996+ presumably for paranoid drivers who want to lock the doors while driving. Volvo does not want you to do this because, if in a accident, first responders will not be able to open the doors.

A funny thing has happened to mine a couple of times. If you try to manually unlock the door the same time the automatic process is working it goes into the "break-in mode". The hazard lights start flashing and you can't get it started. You can fix it by cycling the remote opener on and off. Maybe you can get a remote somehow from a dealer?

This car doesn't have remote capability, key only.

If I unlock with the key on the driver's side, all of the lock buttons pop up and then the motor pulls them all back down as soon as the key is no longer pushing left.

Hmmm, I haven't tried from the passenger side yet...

You know... my C70 does that sometimes. I *think* it has something to do with the anti-lockout feature, but I can't make sense of it either.

On previous models you can't lock the driver's door with the door open, the 1998 seems to have some sort of "don't stay locked if the key's in the car" feature.

I only just got plates on my 1994 today. I'm testing running it to work tomorrow. I'll play with the locks when I get to work and see if it does anything similar.

I suspect that whatever it is, it's not working perfectly.
