engine change 850 1996

whilst contemplating my head gasket replacement due a water leak mentioned in my previous post, i was wondering about installing a later model engine with less miles on it obtained from a dismantler at hopefully the right price. Has anyone done this exercise and in your opinions , is it doable or mission impossible? David

Hi Klaus, i thought as much and i guess i was hoping for a miracle fix. Back to reality though, considering what the car is worth, i agree with your sentiments and will replace the head gasket first being the most logical and cheapest option. Thanks David

While the block is the same year to year, assuming the displacement is the same, The problem is the Head is different. Different vacuum routings and mounting areas for other small pieces. Until 1999 when ETM and coil overs was introduced.

To keep it simple a 1996 and 1997 are interchangable without much grief. Of course, it is easier to replace the head than lift the engine out.
