New Manifold - EGR fitting at Wrong Angle (Pic) 850 1994

I got my new manifold yesterday, very nice stainless steel, excellent welds all around, all holes and gaskets align. I just came in from pulling the old manifold and installing the new. The last part to be hooked up is the EGR pipe. So imagine my horror when I realize that the fitting is tilted about 40 degree backwards - instead of parallel to the line of the engine.

Is this thing plain wrong, or (like a few other things) is there another style of EGR pipe.

Pulling and returning this thing is not an ideal option. Is there a way to safely modify the EGR pipe? Maybe an angled plumbing fitting? to fix the direction?

This was the last thing to do before putting the car on the road and I'm pretty fried at this point.

Not 100% positive, but I think all n/a's engines in the 850/S70's used the same manifold. Turbo's manifolds may be different or the EGR is capped. In any event if they said it would fit your car they need to make it right for you.

Turbo manifolds are very different. The seller is paying return shipping on the unit. Now I just have to pull it and box it back up.

I guess the replacement manifold went in OK?

I'm about to replace that manifold and wonder if you have some suggestions
as to what works best. How much could you get done from the top?

Thanks, Bill

Maybe the company who sent you this manifold has a fix suggestion. It looks like it was welded incorrectly. Send them the photo. They may have an EGR pipe for this problem. Or they may give you a partial refund for your time if it's their error.

Can you lengthen the pipe from the other end?

I know it's not a great comfort, but at least the labor is free to remove and replace with a correct fit.

Good luck.

They seller has gotten in touch with me and I've sent some photos.

Only choices I can see in keeping this manifold are to cut the EGR pipe and install a fitting to extend it, or perhaps some sort of bent fitting.

I was hoping that maybe a later model used a pipe that fit at this angle.

maybe, I was hoping for many years of great performance from a nice new rust-proof stainless manifold, but if they can't fix this, I'll have to go with something else. How much are you asking? I need something "like new"

Hey Thanks. I'm still trying to go with a stainless unit, but if that doesn't work out,l I'll shoot you a message. I expect the #2 replacement to arrive tomorrow.

Unless you can lengthen and bend the EGR pipe...

The other pipes I looked at are similar to this one on Ebay, where the exhaust pipe comes out straight for a bit and the EGR nipple is in the straight portion.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Volvo-850-S70-V70-exhaust-manifold-stainless-steel-new-tig-welded-9471934-/380459537938?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3AVolvo%7CModel%3A850&hash=item589527d612&vxp=mtr#ht_2868wt_944

Scroll down for the larger picture. Your new pipe has the EGR attached to a bend and is not compatible with the EGR fitting.

yeah, this seem like a lost cause and a huge waste of my time and money.
The car is now crippled.

This was hardly the cheapest manifold, but Swedish Lamps wants a lot for shipping, so that manifold is more like $160

All of the 850/70 EGR hook ups are at the same angle for the NA engine. The company blew it.

And just this afternoon I was kicking the weatherman for the lousy Spring we are having. It is still too cold to work on my car! I looked at the plug wires the other day, original. Oil leaking out of the PCV valve area. Oil still leaking out of the drain plug, very slowly. The ABS light comes on every other engine start.

Yes, I do drive it on errands, with my phone in my pocket. The trust is not there yet.

I realized that I've got seepage from the RMS... so you're in good company.

seepage from the RMS 850 1994

I haven't crawled under my car yet, but I wonder if that is why a previous owner replaced the clutch at 150K.

If there is just a weep of oil at the RMS, clean out the PVC and make sure there is never positive pressure in the crankcase. I have thought of running engine cleaner, like AutoRx, to eliminate any sludge before switching to synthetic.

A seeping RMS can be saved, sometimes.

BTW, HF63's exhaust manifold looked pretty good.
