Front End Racket 850 1993

Hello again lads.

The front end of my 1993 850 GLT is making all kinds noise. Bangs, bumps, rumbles, rattles...

I purchased a strut kit from FCP Groton about a 18 months ago and had my mechanic install everything. Struts, spring seats and bumpers. I have gone maybe 15,000 miles.

Are the bolts on top on the struts under the hood supposed to rotate easily?

Something is wrong. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Negative, if you are talking about the large bolts on top of the strut tower. If you try to turn then clockwise, they should have resistance and spring back to the start position when you let off the pressure on the wrench.

If the top bolts turn easily, the spring seats are shot. Turning the top bolt should feel like pulling rubberbands. 15K miles on spring seats! Either your mechanic did it wrong or didn't replace them. Even OEM should last longer than that. Of course, cheap generic seats...

If you replace them again, use XC90 spring seats or IPDs heavy duty version.

Don't forget to check the endlinks for play, the OEM version wear fast. Just reach behind the wheel and grab the thin verticle rod and push/pull, any play in the rod signifies worn rods.

Klaus,

Thanks for your timely reply.

Just before I posted, I noticed I was able to turn the bolts on the strut tower by hand. No wrench was needed.

Gonna crawl underneath and check out the endlinks tomorrow. Its been a few years
since I service those.

This spring seat issue has me pretty grumpy. I checked my transaction for the strut kit and it was just about 18 months ago. I really haven't done much driving
on the new stuff at all.
