HELP! Slight Oil Leak. 850 1996

Hi,

I looked at a 1996 850 turbo today with 65K miles. Price is $13K. The car ran great except I crawled under and found fresh engine oil on the bottom of the engine. I am NOT a Volvo expert so I do not know what problems these cars generally have. The oil is also around the front of the head - maybe coming from the intake gasket. Any ideas what this could be? Is the price fair? How long do the turbos generally last? Your feedback is appreciated.

Tell the seller to fix it..... or taking $800 that what it will cost to fix the rear main seal.....

But than it could be the turbo line return O-ring in that case it cost nothing..........you can fix it yourself.......

Safe bet I will take it to the shop paid... $60 have the car fully inspcect and look at......

If it is your rearmain seal the leak will get worse....

    Good luck......

I just took my '94 850 (non-turbo) in for an oil leak. Response was that it was the engine rear main oil seal where the transmission connects. It involves pulling the transmission. Estimate was 2 days labor plus a $20 part, therefore $700-800. Beware.

Re: HELP! Slight Oil Leak. 850 1996

When I bought my 95T a year ago it had a similar leak around valve cover which seemed to just be the oil fill cap gasket, which I adjusted to make tighter. That seemed to clear up top of engine oil.

I then had a little oil dripping from turbo compressor housing (couple drops on garage every day). For this I just removed inlet duct to compressor and cleaned very well and tried to get a tighter fit on the turbo when I re-attached. Since so many people mentioned it and it was cheap I also replaced the seals on the turbo oil return line because I wasn't positive that some of the oil wasn't soming from there. After doing these two things it dosen't seem to drip at all as far as I can tell. The oil level also never goes down. I use 5w30 Mobil 1.

just my fun with oil drips... Good luck

I just bought a 98 V70 T5 myself and noticed an slight oil leak coming from the turbo unit. It lloks like a drop of oil is hanging down there and is soiled. Volvo tech said its normal with volvo turbos. So far I had no problems. It is called sippage.
