Sad news: broke front susp and... S40-V40 2001

Well... I'm really bummed as I now have broken our V40 (my wife's car) by slipping sideways into a curb. I broke both front and rear passenger side wheels (totally cracked and bent but miraculously they held the air in the tires... although the front was showing signs of leaks). The front suspension was damaged and I had to call Volvo to have them send a flatbed to pick us up.

I had them take us to the dealer and they won't be able to assess the damage until Monday. My question to the group is... which is the best place for this work to be done, a body shop or the dealer? There was no cosmetic damage (other than the broken wheels and visibly bent front suspension). The body was unscratched. I am concerned as this is a front wheel drive car and I'd hate to have problems in the future with tire wear etc. This car has been excellent, has not had any suspension problems at all (until I had something to do about it).

I'm not sure if there is going to be any frame damage, would the dealer by able to tell? Would they be able to replace/fix the suspension and align all 4s and bring them to original spec. Any advice and input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Alberto

    Alberto,

Yo, bummer about the car. Let me guess... a bit of sideways drift at speed? Patch of ice?

Instead of looking at putting on 16" wheels, why not go with 17 inchers instead? 17" wheels aren't that much more than 16's. You know of course that bigger wheels lead to all kinds of suspension modifications....

Re: Sad news: broke front susp and... S40-V40 2001

Should be an easy job for a good dealer tech really if there's no body work. I see cars like that often during the winter. The obvious bent parts are first replaced, then the car gets a 4WD alignment to make sure that everything's within specs. If there's anything else wrong with the cars suspension/frame/etc that's not adjustable, then either more parts are required or the frame might need straightening by a frame shop (body shop).

Some body shops will also do all the above too if they have a good mechanic but the body shop near us has been bringing us the cars for suspension work before they do the body work.

      John,

I've been meaning to ask you... what dealer do you work for? Are you in Chapel Hill? One of the master mechanics at Crown Volvo-Honda is John O.

      Thanks,

      Alberto

The rear brake pad premature wear issue is really not right. Volvo should accept responsibility as the pads should last at least 24k or more especially rears. Looks like I'm going to need to do mine soon . What is the tool you needed to compress the piston into the caliper ? Does the piston push straight in or is it a corkscrew style where it must twist as it is pushed back in.Thanks Elliot.

Yannis , Just going from past experience. 24k is a minimum.740t 1991 that we had prior to the s40 got 36k on front pads and i did the rears at the same time just to have new friction on all wheels at the same time. Rears still looked fine. What has been your experience on the s40 pads? Thanks Elliot

If you dont know anyone in your area who has had good work done, then it might pay to do some detective work. Call around to the various dealerships, and ask who they would recommend to get that kind of work done. If they ask what model car you have, just name any one that the dealer sells. You might find a trend, in that several all recommend the same place. Get creative, and call some wrecking yards, tow companies, etc. Then call your local Better Business office and see if there are any complaints against any shops you are considering, perhaps ask the shop for references, etc. It's a bit of work, but it's better than paying the consequences of a poor choice. Good luck, and sorry to hear about your car.
