Hi I have a Volvo S40 2004 ,just went out for gas and the SRS light on dashboard stays on after the normal 5 seconds after the car is started. I played with seat belt on,off,ignition switch on/off different positions and stays on all the tme.The chimes warning the seat bell/door open go off normally,just light stays on. Look thru owners manual and tells about a SRS system fault. Also tells me to look at driver's side pilar sticker for service/replacement of air bags/seat belt tensioners. Look at and it shows Jul 2014,more than a year from now. Do I have to take the car to Volvo Dealer for inspection as they suggest if light stays on? What do you suggest me to do? I'm afraid even to think I have to do to the dealer...

Someone with a pc based scan tool should be able to get the SRS code for you. Otherwise, the dealer is the only option. A hand held generic scanner will NOT work in this case.

Probably a simple fix to the driver seat seatbelt.

As long as the SRS light is on, the air bags will not work. So buckle up.

EDIT:
The seatbelts and airbags do not need to be replaced for the life of the car. In most cases.

I am in the Twin Cities, a bit west of you. There used to be a good Volvo indie in Port Jefferson. Always call first to see if a shop has a Volvo scanner, as they are expensive.

If you have a laptop, a $17 cable and software will get you the SRS codes and let you reset them.
