Variable Intake - re-attach hose under the intake? 850 1994

1994 Non-Turbo Sedan. Bought it as a beater, but cleaning it up and putting it into service as a 3rd car.

after PCV service, I can't seem to get the hose re-attached to the variable intake-thing. It popped off when I was re-connecting everything and now it's inaccessible. My human arms are not shaped correctly...

I was going to come in underneath, but that's usually pretty bad. Any Advice?

You lost me. Do you mean the heated air intake duct? Which end are you trying to put on?

ah, sorry. There's a vacuum-activated intake valve control device under the intake manifold. It's vaguely similar to the EGR valve assembly (There's not matching device on a turbo model). The vacuum hose to it came off... w/o removing the manifold (again) it's not accessible (unless you have snakes for arms or a prehensile tail)... except maybe from under the car.. or maybe if the radiator fan assembly is removed.

I was hoping for advice on how best to re-attach this thing w/o tearing down the intake again....

Maybe someone can tell me if the vacuum device even does anything useful. It reminds me a lot of a B20 intakes with the second set of throttle plates in the manifold. My turbo C70 has no such weirdness. I recall that the overly complex B20 manifolds were regarded as useless and worth removing (if memory serves)... So maybe this is something that folks disable anyway...?

The fan assembly is only 2 screws. But getting under the manifold is a real pain. The vacuum line is needed, sorry. Make sure is it not gummed up before you put it back on, others have said the nipple to the manifold gets plugged up.

Still to cold up here to get into my engine bay.

PS. My cruise control works!!

yeah, figured it was going to be a problem. What are the symptoms of the thing not working?

Also.. after upgrading the knock sensors and re-assembling, I still have a CEL. I'm just hoping that it needs to be cleared out of the OBDI unit...

First, the throttle response will be poor at best, but only at idle and very low rpm. It really comes into play when quickly letting off the throttle at higher rpms, before the injector flow is diminished by the computer and fuel pressure regulator.

I intend to clean mine this Spring, if it ever stops snowing.

Humm... I could see that. my symptoms are still odd. I'll get the thing re-attached.. somehow and get the CEL cleared out.

Also found that both tie rod boots are cracked through and the grease is gone.

Weather was 50 today. Nice, but ran out of daylight before I had a chance to look at the car. I guess my biggest worry is that the guy who rebuilt the engine didn't get things quite right... will report back.
