Can an XC70 be converted to FWD? V70-XC70 2004

It still works just fine and is a beautiful car, but living in TX I really do not need it. The angle drive on these rigs is known to go out and is expensive to fix. It is seperate from the transmission so it seems it could just be removed. Just curious----

Removing the prop shaft is not a difficult task, just heavy. If you do decide to remove it, mark the heck out of it so you can put it back if needed. Remember, the car will then have a lot of torque steer when the pavement is wet or slippery.

The best option is to flush the bevel gear oil every 50K miles and service the Haldex (change oil and filter).

Removing the prop shaft will get you 2-3 mpg increase.

Thanks Klaus. The suggested have all been performed. Those angle drives weep so I just keep checking the oil level.

If your angle drive is weeping, remove the propshaft. I would use the edge of a file to scratch a mark on both ends of the propshaft and the part that connects to the angle drive and haldex unit. Then paint or scratch the center connection to make re-assembly easier if needed. Needless to say, keep the bolts!

Once the propshaft is removed, all stress is removed from the angle gear. Still check for weepage occasionally, but it should not be a problem. The seal can be replaced if it is a problem.
