1-din radio empty space S40-V40 2001

I am planning to remove the standard 2-din radio/tape and replace

with a 1-din radio/minidisc.

Is there a standard Volvo part to cover the second empty 1-din slot?

If so, what is the catalog number, and where can I order it?

The local Volvo dealer (here in Israel) was no help with this,

telling me that it is not possible to replace the radio(!).

Thanks,

Sergio

    Re: 1-din radio empty space S40-V40 2001

Why not replace it with another double din radio - they sell them w/ mini disk capabilities also and the equalizer and button spacing is far more impressive. The crutchfield catalog has a few offered by Kenwood, JVC and Alpine. I am going to be making a similar upgrade and personally didn't want another eye glass holder in the middle of my dash. I thought volvo did a good job of fully utilizing the space given. But in my search, I did see a dash kit for a single din radio made especially for Volvos. Whether or not it fit the s40 specifically, no one was able to tell me. In most of these retail stores, the S40 hasn't even been entered into their computer system yet. Good luck...

      Re: 1-din radio empty space S40-V40 2001

Regarding the 2-din radios in the S40: with the location

of the radio down in the center console, does the larger

moving front pannel of these 2-din radios get stuck in the

      gear shift handle?

Here in Israel it is not easy to find these 2-din radios,

they have to be special ordered. Combined with our light, sunny

70% tax on them, it gets expensive.

Maybe another possible solution is to use the upper 1-din slot

for the tuner/minidisc, and the lower slot for an equalizer.

Does anybody tried the Pioneer digital equalizer with the

autocalibration capability? Does this kind of setup require

power amplifiers to really make it work?

      Sergio

        Sergio,

Kenwood makes a minidisc/EQ combo in a single DIN configuration. The main problem is that it has to be coupled with a Kenwood head unit. If minidisc is the way you want to go that is an option. Buy a cheap head unit then the minidisc unit. Both units will fit nicely into the 2DIN opening of the S/V 40. The minidisc unit costs approx $400 US.
